The following posting is a collection of three articles from 1947, presented as they first appeared in the original BSRA Round Robins and Journals, all three explorations of the flying saucer phenomena as they were reported to Borderland Sciences Associates by director Meade Layne.

Fly, Lokas, Fly!

On June 26, 1947, the morning radio broadcasts in California carried a seemingly crack-pot story, sandwiched between Hollywood gossip and some other puerility, about a flight of curious objects over the Cascade Mountains, observed and daringly reported by one Kenneth Arnold, a “flying business man”, “flying fire extinguisher salesman”, “U.S. Forest Service employee”, “veteran pilot”, “fire control engineer”, “owner and manager of the Great Western Fire Control Company” (etc., etc., crescendo as the facts were verified). Mr. Arnold, flying east toward Mt. Rainier on June 25, at 9200 ft., spotted nine saucer-shaped objects, “big as a DC-4 passenger plane”, flying in a “screwy formation”, at right angles to his own line of flight, about 25 miles ahead of him, at a 10,000 ft. altitude. They were “weaving and ducking in and out”, were “extremely shiny as if nickel plated”, had a “rocking movement”, were half-moon shaped, oval in front and convex in the rear, without tails, bulges or cowling, looked like disks – and the line waves “like the tail of a Chinese kite.” By clock time and later triangulation the speed was estimated as between 1200 and 1700 miles per hour.

This temerarious tale encouraged another “flying business man”, of Oklahoma City, to tell how, some weeks ago, he and his wife saw a “very big, shiny, silver object moving at terrified speed,” without any noise. “I know that boy up there (Arnold) really saw them,” said the Oklahoman. Several residents of Seattle next reported the strange craft; then an engineer at Joliet (Ill.) reported nine of them. If these were the same as seen by Arnold the same day, they had made the 2000 miles in 50 minutes. The craft flipped and righted themselves in unison, as if all were powered from the leading disk or were in tow. The same or a similar flight of nine was seen the next day over Kansas City. Reports of other observers came in from Oregon, and “nine or ten” of the objects were reliably reported over Woodland, Wash., two days later. Other accounts came from Boise, the Grand Canyon area, west Texas, New Mexico, the Columbia River country, and San Francisco. All the reports agree essentially in description. On July 3, the objects were reported over Denver, and even the Lt. Governor of Idaho saw something he couldn’t explain – this time a “comet-like object hanging in the sky”. And “three metallic gleaming disks” were seen “going around and around in a circle” over Beverly Hill, Calif. By the time RR gets into print the things may be as common as breakfast food advertisements, so we won’t follow the story seriatim any further. Enough has been said to show the first stages of the affair.

It goes without saying that public, official, and press reaction followed the familiar pattern: first a series of hoots, gibes and jeers, then a baker’s dozen of “explanations” (many of them incredibly asinine), finally a blessed silence by hooters and explainers alike, but not by disappearance of the reports. Among the explainers we regret to include General Wainright, who said “People obviously saw something, I don’t know what. I don’t believe all the claims. I don’t believe it at all” – which is understandable, if slightly incoherent. Howard Blakeslee, science editor for AP, obviously trying hard, suggested that the objects were merely reflected flashes of light from distant planes, which were being given a fanciful build-up by minds stuffed with scientifiction. A university of Oregon astronomer thought Arnold’s saucers were “persistent vision” caused by looking at reflections on the glass of his own plane; a Portland meteorologist thought it was all optical illusion caused by layers of atmosphere, and when one E.H. Sprinkle of Eugene, Ore., got a photograph of “seven dots lined across the sky”, other photographers said probably the negative had not been agitated in the developer. “Army rocket experts” decided in favor of jet planes, and the projectile theory was also popular for a while. Several ex-service men recalled having seen objects similar to the saucers during the war, when they of course got the brush-off from their superiors for reporting them. — We’re all for Caution, of course, and the judicious and common-sense approach to strange happenings, and we know that the Brush-offer League has a tremendous membership, and has been able to completely suppress and extinguish a whole book-full of desperately important facts which happened to be isolated and sporadic. This time, however, the facts, being saucer-shaped, fly right back again, refuse to accept the damned-datum status — By present writing the hoot-owl chorus has died away, but the affair remains front-page news and the newspapers are really in a bad fix, having a most sensational event on hand and nothing what-ever to say about it.

The Fortean Society (to which this writer belongs) is undergoing a most painful parturition, under the midwifery of Secretary Tiffany Thayer; so far the only issue has been an apparition of Charles Fort (to whom be honor), gabbling “I told you so” . Fort was a mighty hunter-out and collector of weird and science-damned happenings, of which strange sky-craft were not the least. The problem is right up the avenue for Vincent Gaddis also, who lately sent us some 20 instances of similar mysteries of the skies. The most incredible and outrageous things happen, and always have been happening, and students of such matters know about them; the most incredible fact of all is that there actually are people who think we live in a sane, orderly, intelligible and well-understood world, where “science” has explained everything or is about to do so,, and that these ignoramuses include about nine-tenths of our so-called intellectuals… Recurring to Secretary T.T. mentioned above, and while we think of it, it was he who gibed more than once at the Round Robin Corrida (Kareeta) story of last November, not because of its extraordinary nature but because it “stinked” of the “occult”. The “occult” got into because we printed a statement, for what it was worth, received clairaudiently by a most honest and non-professional medium. “Let Austin have his swink (or stink) to him reserved!” — We’re all for the Forteans, be it understood, in their war on scientism and smugism, but otherwise they get no forwarder with their hunting simply because most of them are nauseated by the mere mention of anything occult or spiritualistic.

To return to our saucers, so to speak: a sergeant of the State Highway Patrol reported seeing a dozen bright metal objects about the size of a football whiz over San Francisco Bay and fall into the ocean. A resident of a town in Washington says he saw one of the disks “explode about 200 ft. from the ground. There was a great shower of sparks but no flash, and flames which seemed to hurtle to the ground.” Other observers have reported a dim vapor trail and a faint humming noise – that one disk dropped a reddish-white flare – that some have been seen hovering or stationary. Lt. Col. Turner (N.M. Rocket Proving grounds) is sure they are jet planes, and that certain “falling bodies” were meteors, but “is investigating”. We also hear of a “disk-like bluish object following a zigzag course over New Mexico” – a flight of “soup-dishes dropping south at 150-200 mi. per hr” over San Diego, and “a silver ball that swooshed” over Colorado. Some of these items complicate the problem considerably – if that is possible; particularly the objects falling into the sea and the disk which “exploded”. And “Astronomers at Seattle and Joliet said there was no natural explanation for the reports.” Is’t possible our learned brothers have an unnatural one up their sleeves? Or maybe, just none at all? That sentence we quoted intrigues us almost as much as the saucers themselves; the more you think about it, the less sense it makes.

In a final sense there is, of course, no such thing as an explicable fact. Everything known to us is, at bottom, equally mysterious. But there are familiar mysteries, such as sunsets, and grass blades, and systems of philosophy, which we can fit into categories and hence relate to other facts — and things like “black days” and fairy tombs and Cock Lane apparitions which are unfamiliar and hence called mysteries. Add, flying saucers. The unfamiliar mysteries make mockery of “scientific” smugness, and also of common sense – and also of about nine-tenths of of all the alleged occult learning of the pseudo-adepts. Among these latter wise-acres there ere undoubtedly some thousands who pretend to exalted and secret knowledge of anything and everything, saucers included; and it’s equally certain that not a dozen of them will agree. We think there actually are people who know – but few if any of them are going to say anything, account of the utter futility of telling the ‘facts of life’ to children. They are merely sitting tight anf waiting for the Last Act, without expectation of surviving it, or much interest in doing so. If they have a pretty good idea what makes the curtain go up or down, they won’t say much about it, or start any last minute panic in the audience.

Having said this much, and taunted all learned men with their ignorance (ear-wig to our betters), we new present the only intelligent and intelligible comment on the saucer party so far offered by anybody. That doesn’t mean we ‘guarantee’ it in any sense; we wouldn’t ‘guarantee’ Tuesday after Monday. But it’s a point of view, and coherent end possible and probably interesting to everybody with a smattering of esoteric knowledge – which leaves most of our intelligentsia out of it, but happily lets in about fifty million lesser folk of this Pilgrims’ Pride. The commentator is our friend “Lingford”, a familiar control at the Mark P. seances. If nobody on our own plane has anything intelligent to say about saucers, why not interrogate the ghosties – get an astral viewpoint anyway, even if you don’t believe a word of it. Of course, if you think Lingford is a dissociated complex, a subconscious invention, a personalized memory, or a wholly fictional character invented the medium and the RR editor for ye sheckels sake (as RR has been credibly informed), your interest will be “O” with the rim left off. But having spent many hours in converse with this oeuf dur of the Invisibles, we consider him a very real person, and quite smart and well-posted and worth listening to. Our semi-quote is not verbatim-literatim-et-punctuatim but it does not misrepresent him in any way.

‘When will you people learn that there are worlds within worlds – that the etheric worlds interpenetrate with your plane and with each other? I know I should not be sticking my neck out by talking so much about those saucers, as you call them, at least until I have investigated more fully. But they are not craft constructed on your planet, nor is it necessary to assume that they came from any other planet. It seems impossible to get it through the heads of you people, that objects can pass from an etheric to a dense level of matter, and will then appear to materialize there. Then they may disappear by dematerializing – returning to an etheric condition. It is a perfect analogue to the materializations witnessed in the seance room, which many of your learned men bear witness to. Not only do human forms materialize there, but solid objects appear miraculously, as you say, and often these ore brought from long distances. You call them apports, but an apport is dematerialized so that only the etheric patter remains, and then the original atoms are reassembled in the pattern or mould and you have a materialized object. Well, these saucers that puzzle you so much come out of an etheric world also and can return to it. The purpose of these visitors is simply to compel your attention, to wake you up. They come with good intent. They have some idea of experimenting with earth life – I mean, of coming to your world to live. There will be many strange sky appearances, as we have often told you before in these seances. Watch for them. These saucers make their great speed because of their peculiar bun-shape and peculiar motion; they encounter almost no air resistance. I do not know their means of propulsion but I shall try to find out. The wilful ignorance and hostility of your time toward etheric and astral studios is appalling. The strange sky craft reported over your city last November was probably also an etheric construction. These visitors are not excarnate humans; but they are human beings who live in their own world, which happens to be made of stuff which your senses cannot directly perceive, and which you therefore childishly imagine cannot exist at all…

Sic dixit Lingford. This communicator (to add the personal touch) was a resident of New York State, and departed thence for his present ‘station astral’ some 40-45 years ago, at the age of 40 years. He is a somewhat stocky young man, very self-assured, a great reader and traveller about, good-humored but also a trifle impatient and sardonic at times. This ‘information’ comes from other communicators and from several persons on ‘this side’ who have encountered him while on astral excursions. (If you don’t believe in that kind of info., kindly skip this paragraph) We also understand that he lives in a house on the side of a valley, overlooking a beautiful lake, has many flowers, paints a little, and has a great many books. When we asked him if he lived alone, he replied “You bet I do – and I like it!”. He added that his plane is a “very lovely place” and that he has no desire or intention of going anywhere else, least of all of returning to earth life – at least for a very long time. We have talked with this communicator two or three times a week for nearly a year, and can only say that if he is a fraud, or a complex or secondary personality, no sign of it has so far appeared. He is unpretentious, conservative, strongly individualized, and apparently a very real person apart from the regrettable fact of being invisible and being obliged to talk through the organism of another person. We don’t ‘guarantee’ him, any more than we do Wednesday after Tuesday – or our next-door neighbor, who may be a hallucination (from 5:00 a.m. to midnight, anyway).

It is quite obvious, of course, that this Voice from the neant is not going to get a hearing, and the fact distresses neither him nor the RR editor. If or when the mystery of the flying disks is solved, and if they turn out to be something quite different from Lingford’s description, we do not have a single syllable to retract. We are telling our readers the facts as they now stand, about this communicator and his statements concerning the phenomenon. What he has to say fits very well into the main body of occult knowledge – but he may be mistaken about the disks and we may be mistaken about him. We believe that the time is coming, and to some extent is now here, when scientists and students of every subject will accept the cooperation of the invisible helpers.

By the 7th of July the disks had been reported over 34 states – yet certain jackasses, by which we mean astronomers, physicists, editors and radio commentators were still gabbling about delusion, hysteria, mirages and the like. On that date the Editor held a short “sitting” with a non-professional medium (Mr. Mark Probert), and after some delay an interesting communication was received, of which we can here print the substance only:

“Well, how am I doing now?” (referring to difficulty in control). “No, I have never spoken thru a medium this may before, but I did speak once thru a trumpet at Lily Dale” (a spiritualist center in N.Y.). I was Thomas Edison. During my life on your plane I made many secret experiments, in the effort to recapture and reproduce sounds made in past time, and preserved in the ether. I still believe that this is possible and that it will be done. At the time I had only a hypothesis to work on, but one often has to use a hypothesis in order to have a starting point.

(Q. as to how he happened to come to the medium) . Well, you have a very unusual group over here, who are interested in the particular type of seance which you carry on. . . Continue with this work and you will probably get some very strange news. If you publicise it you will be ridiculed, but I was ridiculed too.

About these disks that are stirring up so much comment – I’m a little afraid they are going to make trouble. (Q). I mean, they may start a panic. My ideas about them are much the same as those given by Lingford. They are etheric in nature, and they materialize spontaneously on entering the vibration rate of your world of dense matter. I think this is going to stir up a hell of a lot of trouble. The great trouble, of course, is with your scientists, they can’t get into the right way of thinking about such problems.

(Q). They happen to be appearing just now, because your world is now in that phase of thought. Do you understand what I’m getting at? There will be many other types of strange sky craft also. That Corrida (Kareeta) you wrote about last year was the same type, etheric construction. It was an experimental craft. (Q) These people are much like yourselves but they are much bigger.

(Q) Yes, I think it might be right to say they come from the Lokas. * No, they are not astral, and not from any of the planets you know about. They come from an etheric planet which your senses do not perceive. Some of the disks carry a crew, but others are managed by remote control. These craft have some means of radiating a powerful energy which is very destructive. If they are attacked or interfered with they may easily destroy the attacking planes. (Q) No, I doubt whether they can be communicated with by radio, but if you can signal by radar perhaps that would work. I don’t understand radar, myself. If you can make friends with these people you can learn a world of new facts from them. The medium is getting very tired and I think I shall leave you.”

One point in the above which we feel sure is correct, is that “strange news” or any other kind, derived from mediumistic sources, will be ridiculed. We reflect for the ten-thousandeth time on the tragedy, the irony, and the futilities of the whole contemporary situation. Isolationism, applied to the life of our plane, is as stupid as in social and political matters; yet of help from beyond the border our ‘intelligentsia’ will have none… It should be easy to understand that a very serious and dangerous situation exists with regard to these disks, and we present here in these pages data which might avert disaster – yet it is doubtful whether any person high in authority can even be induced to read the facts here set down. Our science and our culture have no means of dealing with the issues which are new fast arising… If the same military judgment which permitted a Pearl Harbor should instigate an attack on these strange craft, the results, and the panic to follow, and the flood of international suspicion might well be the beginning of the end of our national existance.

Yet if you repeat in public our favorite RR principle, that public education in psychic matters is imperative, and intensely and supremely practical, you are considered as being teched in the head!

[NOTE: There are 7 of those Lokas under the Vishnu-Purana classification. The word simply means places (loci), worlds, wheres. They do not belong to the earth-chain of globes, nor to the astral. They are just as 'material' as our world, but the matter is of a different vibration range and cannot be detected by our senses or any existing instruments... Note that Corridas (Kareeta) was an experimental craft from the same Loka, as indeed the communicators asserted indirectly at the time.]

For the sake of the record we quote another Control, who declined to give his name:

“Most of these craft you are talking about are corrugated lengthwise of the oval. The controls are in the front section. The middle section is a laboratory. The rear contains defensive and offensive armament. They have means of sending out a powerful radiation of energy in all directions from the ship.”

Among the countless stupidities engendered by this new sensation, is the cackling in some journalistic roosts over the discrepancy in accounts of size of the “Lokas.” Such people should be threatened with instant death unless they can agree at once as to whether the full moon is the size of a pie plate or a cartwheel.

It is reasonably certain that a number of small objects are flying about. Some of them may have fallen from the Lokas. But a doughnut overboard does not prove that all air liners are doughnut size.

It may also pay us to take careful note, that new sky craft of various designs have been predicted. The Corrida (Kareeta) is a case in point; it did not resemble the Lokas at all, but is said to have been an experimental design and to have come from the same region. (Tho’ neither the public nor the so-called scientific mind of our generation is going to be able to grasp where this ‘region’ is, or rather what it is).

Only one fact has arisen, so far, to suggest that these sky newcomers are of earth invention. The general concept of the saucer-shaped craft has been grasped by several inventors, and a Frenchman named George De Bay actually made a working model, powered by rubber bands, as far back as 1928. Our own authorities, characteristically, turned thumbs down, Did this inventor find financial and technical aid from some foreign Power? The idea is not pleasant to contemplate. We prefer the Lokas, ourselves. It has not yet even occurred to our wise-cracking commentators, that the operators of the Lokas, whoever they be, have our world completely at their mercy.

Another cause of mirth, to the cackle contingent, is that strange sky craft have often been reported in the past – and since these are all supposed to have been delusions, the Lokas must be fancy-bred also. But students of such curiosa have compiled lists of them, and studied them for years past. And now somebody has discovered Charles Fort’s Book of the Damned, which also ‘proves’ that these happenings are very old stuff. It is described as a “rare old book” – tho every student of the borderland sciences owns a copy, and the complete works of Fort are on sale – page Tiffany Thayer, Fortean Society, with a five-dollar bill clearly displayed, sign of the Fortean Brotherhood.

We venture a small prediction of our own – that the Lokas will probably be withdrawn for a time (to the huge satisfaction of the cackle-club), but will reappear later. It is to be hoped – tho’ against all probability – that our Leading Intellects will learn a few pertinent facts in the meantime.

“The animals” (cattle and horses) “sure do get up and go when they see these things – So says rancher Henry Seay to a reporter of the Birmingham News (July 7), referring to a disk which swooped down within 500 feet “dropping sparks like dust”. We disrespectfully recommend this to AP science editor Blakeslee, and to all the “spots in your eyes” professors. Can a cow be frightened by muscae volitantes – in the eyes of her owner, or do Dobbin and his master have the same hallucination at the same moment? It will take more than the eye-wash of the Doctors of Science to explain this incident – plus some half-dozen photographs, plus reports of experience observers.. Perhaps our civilization ought to be destroyed – considering the number of learned, brilliant, and self-complacent FOOLS! (We thank P.W. Osman of Birmingham)

Concerning the Lokas, ‘Flying Disks’

In this September issue of Flying Roll, the RR Editor has recurred to this subject at some length, and there are a few points we wish to keep before the RR readers also. For one thing, it was stated in FR that this issue of RR would give the name of a national magazine which would presently print a special edition devoted entirely to the phenomena of the disks. But this information has not yet been released. We may have to handle this by means of a special bulletin to our readers.

We do not know at the moment, just what explanation, if-any, the magazine referred to will give concerning the Lokas. But we can assure you that any lingering doubts concerning their reality will be definitely disposed of. There never has been any question on this point, among thoughtful and informed people; but there has been a systematic campaign of denial and ridicule, as well as an unofficial but effective censorship on news stories. Make no mistake: the Lokas are real, and the authorities know it, and the F.B.I. and Military Intelligence are deeply concerned, and no one yet has been able to trump up a yarn that will satisfy the public, ‘if and when they return in large numbers. Some of these constructions are nearly a mile in diameter.

There are only three hypotheses about them: (1) That they are constructed by some foreign Power (Russia, of course). The practical objections to this theory seem to this writer to be conclusive. (2) The theory suggested by at least one distinguished occultist, that they are craft of Atlantean construction, kept stored in caverns, and now brought out for the training of crews against time of need in the ceasing war. Considering all the data at hand, RR does not at present incline to this view. (3) The flat statements made by the communicators at the Mark P. seances, that they are craft constructed on the etheric levels (etheric worlds interpenetrating with our own) , that their mission is friendly but for definite purposes. That there are flying objects and small craft of many sorts in our skies, all of them experimental efforts on the part of the Ethereans. Some details of construction and mode of propulsion have also been given. Of course, if you reject this last explanation a priori, on account of its source, it is useless at this stage to argue the matter. We only say here, that there is a large amount of contributory data, concerning the interpenetration of the planes of etheric and dense matter; and further, that so far at least, there is not a single item of objective data, of observed fact, which conflicts with the hypothesis of etheric origins When or if such data comes to us, we will present it at once.

We know that the Lokas are new present over other parts of the world, and sooner or later it is most probable that they will return to our own skies. There is danger of panic, and even of war, when once the public realizes that we are completely at the mercy of these visitors – and, of course, attributes them to some unfriendly foreign power. If, as we new believe, they are “apports” from the etheric, it is going to be quite useless to attempt to get this idea across to the masses, and even to most of our alleged intellectuals, and to a public press which is incapable of grasping even the first syllable of what it is all about. This is NEWS of incredible world importance (and so was the much-derided Corrida or Kareeta of last November). We are not trying to sensationalize it – it is already sensational beyond the reaches of imagination. We feel justified in pointing out to our readers, that no other publication in the United States has so far offered either the objective facts or the explanations which have appeared in Round Robin and Flying Roll. . . We do not wish to frighten anyone, but to allay fear, for we feel sure that the Lokas are friendly. But their existence and the issues raised by it must be faced sooner or later, and we believe that in the end our readers will be grateful to RR for preparing the way, to some extent, for the understanding of one of the strangest phenomena in the history of mankind.

The following posting is a collection of three older pieces, presented as they first appeared in the original BSRA Round Robins and Journals, all three explorations of the still mysterious Mount Shasta (Úytaahkoo, the White Mountain), that legendary Cascadian peak in Siskiyou County, California. We present these selections here as a historical survey of early thoughts and ideas on phenomena that has been linked to Shasta, viewed through the dawn prism, in hopes that you will find some value or curiosity in them.

The Mystery of Mt. Shasta

The following article appeared in the Los Angeles Times Sunday Magazine of May 22, 1932, and has since been quoted in part, in many publications. Its interest however is perennial end the mystery still unsolved. For the sections quoted, RR is indebted to Miss Ella Young, of Oceano, Calif., a well-known writer and poet.

The author of the article is Mr. Edward Lenser. He tells us that one morning, while en route to Portland on the Shasta Limited, he went out on the observation platform to see the sunrise, and was looking at Mt. Shasta.

“Gazing upon its splendor, I suddenly perceived that the whole southern side of the mountain was ablaze with a strange reddish-green light – a flame that grew faint, then flared up with renewed brilliance. My first conjecture was a forest fire, but the absence of smoke discounted that theory. The light resembled the glow of Roman candles… The thing intrigued me, and when I met my travelling companion at breakfast, he asked me if I had seen the forest fire on Mt. Shasta.”

“Did you see smoke?” was my question.

“No,” he replied. “Just a red glow.”

Convinced that I had not been the victim of a mirage, I later asked the conductor about the mysterious pyrotechnics. His answer was short but enticing:

“Lemurians,” he said. “They hold ceremonials up there.”

“Lemurians!” ………..

Just as soon as I had transacted my business in Portland I returned to the Mt. Shasta region, incredulous but consumed with curiosity … I planned to equip myself for an expedition ..

I motored toward the point of my investigation, pausing at Weed, a town near Mt. Shasta, for the night. There I discovered that the existence of a ‘mystic village’ on Mt. Shasta was an accepted fact. Business men, amateur explorers, officials and ranchers in the country surrounding Shasta spoke freely of the Lemurian community, and all attested to the weird rituals that are performed on the mountainside at sunset, midnight, and sunrise. Also, they freely ridiculed my avowed trek into the sacred precincts, assuring me that an entrance was as difficult and forbidden as is an entrance into Tibet.

It appears that tho the existence of this colony has been known for more than 50 years, only four or five explorers have penetrated the invisible protective boundaries; and no one has ever succeeded in entering the village, or at least returned to tell the tale. It is of course possible that such a person might have good reasons to hold secret whatever he had seen.

It is safe to say that 50 out of 100 people living within a reasonable distance of Shasta have at some time or other tried to approach the Lemurians – yet many who are known to have penetrated at least part of the mystery will deny having made such an investigation or having any knowledge concerning the Lemurians.

It began to look as if the whole affair was a matter of well-seasoned legendry, yet I myself had seen the strange illumination of Mt. Shasta …. And yet it seemed incredible . . .

Then I learned that the existence of the Lemurians on Mt. Shasta was vouched for some years ago by the scientist Professor Edgar L. Larkin, formerly director of the Mt. Lowe observatory. He penetrated the Shasta wilderness as far as he could, or dared, and then continued his investigations from a promontory with a powerful telescope.

What he saw, he reported, was a great temple in the heart of the mystic village, a marvellous work of carved marble and onyx, rivaling the magnificence of the temples of Yucatan. He saw a village of 600 to 1000 people; they appeared to be engaged in in the manufacture of various articles and in farming the sunny slopes and glens with miraculous results … evidently contented to live as did their Lemurian forebearers … Professor Larkin gatered enough evidence to enable him to say … that in this village live the lest descendants of the first inhabitants of this earth, the Lemurians.^[1]

That these Lemurians are cognizant of the disaster which befell their ancestors is revealed by the fact that each night at midnight they perform a ritual to Guatama, which is the Lemurian name for America. The chief object of this ceremony is to celebrate the escape of their forebears from the doomed Lemuria and their safe arrival in Guatama.

In this midnight ceremony, as in the sunrise and sunset rituals, the weird but wonderful light that first attracted my attention is used. I have seen the midnight ceremonials cause the entire southern side of Mt. Shasta to be illuminated in s most baffling way – a light that reaches up and covers the landscape for great distances … This display of light far exceeds our modern electrical achievements. . .

The Lemurians have been seen on various occasions; they have been encountered in the Shasta forest, but only for a brief glimpse, for they possess the uncanny secret knowledge of the Tibetan Masters^[2] and can blend themselves into their surroundings and vanish. At times they came into neighboring towns – tall, bare-foot, noble-looking men, with close-cropped hair, dressed in spotless white robes that resemble in style the enveloping garment worn by the high-caste East-Indian women of today – to patronize certain stores.

Indeed, the records reveal that at one time on official visit was made to the City of Sen Francisco by a white-robed patriarch from the mystic village. He came on foot, with an escort of younger men, to bring greetings and an assurance of good will upon the anniversary of the founding of their sacred retreat in California. The patriarch was met by an official committee at the Ferry Building and escorted to the City Hall. As soon as greetings had been exchanged the visitors returned to their retreat.

The article concludes by saying that purchases made in Shasta villages by these ‘white-robed men’ include a greet deal of sulphur, lard, and salt; their purchases are paid for in gold nuggets, “they cannot speak our language”; and they make extensive donations to charity. When forest fires occur, they “cause an invisible wall of protection to rise up”.

The alleged factual data in this article obviously falls into some four categories: (a) Observations by Mr. Lenser himself, apparently confined to the lights; (b) Reported observations of Professor Larkin, source not stated – but We believe contained in a small book by Professor Larkin himself; (c) The visit of the “Patriarch” to San Francisco – said to be a matter of record – somewhere; (d) A digest of stories, beliefs and alleged experiences from inhabitants of the Shasta area. It is impossible further to evaluate this material as it stands, but seems certain that there is a considerable substratum of remarkable facts.

We are anxious to know whether there are any recent reports of similar phenomena (within the last 5-4 years), and would appreciate information from our readers.

Associate Lindy Millard begins his discussion by emphasizing the importance of a correct choice of “the right kind of ether” for an intelligible analysis of aeroform data from a mathematical engineering approach. His objective is to clarify the basis of the theory of Hermann Fricke (1876-1949). To do this he first devotes a paragraph to what R. Wussow and C. F. Krafft have to say about optical waves in an aerodynamic ether. Krafft’s comment on Wussow’s article follows:

“Wussow attempted to show that ordinary compressional waves of longitudinal displacement will under proper conditions develop a transverse component by a process similar to diffraction upon passage through a diffraction grating. If Wussow’s contentions are correct, then lightwaves may be primarily of longitudinal displacement, the transverse component brought out or accentuated by the polarizing apparatus. And if this interpretation is correct, then do we have any good reason for assuming that the ether is incompressible? One of the main difficulties I have had with Fricke’s highly dynamic concept of the ether is that such an ether would be almost sure to have compressional elasticity, similar to a gas. Now is such a concept of what the ether really ruled out by any known fact? The mere fact that light waves have a transverse component does not prove that they do not also have a longitudinal component, and if they do have such longitudinal component, then does it not necessarily follow that the ether must have a compressional elasticity? Perhaps the compressional elasticity should be looked upon, not as a property of the quiescent ether per se, but only as a property of ether in active motion as contemplated by Fricke. In such a case the compressional elasticity would result from its inertia of motion.”

Associate Millard then devotes a paragraph to some of the technical terms employed by Krafft. “Compressional waves”, he writes, “are what this name implies: waves of compression and decompression, which follow each other in alternated order. Their speed of propagation – the speed at which their effects are traveling – is roughly equal to the average speed of the individual particles that would not themselves travel more than an inch unless a breeze came along to transport them. As to an augmentation in the number of collisions between the particles, per unit of time, these particles simply “pass it on”. Now “longitudinal displacement” refers to the distances the particles are moved, along a direction parallel to the line of the longest dimension of the 3-dimensional wave-disturbance, or to put it more clearly: most of the movements of any particle in such waves “dis-place” it along – instead of perpendicular to – the line which the disturbance is passed on, or “propagated” – the “longitudinal” direction. The “transverse component” may be one of the parts of the optical-wave motion, which the later will be resolvable into (after diffraction), and this part of “component” will be perpendicular to the light ray, since this component is called “transverse”. A “polarizing apparatus” need not be considered in the following discourse, but to get some idea of what optical polarization means, think about how Polaroid ‘specs’ work. The meaning of the word “incompressible” seems self-evident.

“Fricke’s highly dynamic concept of the ether” is what I wish to share with BSRA scholars presently.

Fricke’s generalized theory of space-ether and matter-energy

Fricke’s “highly dynamic” concept of the ether is that there has existed from eternity an ubiquitous variety of micro-motions in an infinitely expanded ether which is, for the most part, turbulent – like agitated water. If all vortical (eddy) motions were ab» sent from the ether, then a primary ether would exist – incompressible, continuous, and non»elastic, with rotational motion, However since from eternity this ether has possessed in addition to the streaming motions an innumerable quantity of ball-like eddy globules of all different sizes of “grades”, this ether has, as a result of these supplementary vortices, some secondary properties: Compressibility, atomicity, and a quasi-elasticity which is caused by rotational speed. This last-mentioned property is responsible for the pressure of the ether. Because the eternal motions collectively have an omnipresent simultaneity, this concept in itself accounts for the existence of absolute time. The lack of sudden starts and stops in such motions explains the existence of inertial mass in the vortices. Of course, these tiniest vortex balls are not connected with one another through any eddy filaments.

Here I have anticipated any objection: textbooks teach that fluid vortex filaments cannot have any ends which terminate within the fluid, but these filaments must either exist as closed rings or else must terminate on some boundary such as the free surface of the fluid or the wall of the containing vessel. This, however, holds true because of fluid viscosity, which in turn depends on exchanges of momentum between colliding molecules of adjacent stream-layers of flow. But momentum cannot exist unless there is inertial mass present. And yet Fricke postulated for his primordial ether certain vortex balls which do not form closed rings at their range of sizes, nor do any of them extend their rotation axes to some boundary. Actually there is no real contradiction here. The tiniest vortex globules are ellipsoidal in shape and discrete, because they are in their own right the foundational causes of the phenomena of inertial mass and of “bounce” elasticity, since they embody a localized form of uninterrupted eternal motion.

Under certain conditions, comparatively large streams of ether will crowd many of the smallest vortex balls together into coherent streams and lumps of confluent secondary ether. These lumps will contain balls in close-packed formations. And because there are no stronger forces to tear them apart, these lumps can be identified as “plenum” – the uncuttable stuff considered by Greek atomists. From the movement of their integration or construction, they would have the same speed as their component vortex granules, but eventually the lumps may slow down because of collision with encountered vortices, until they no longer have the speed of light, but will finally drift about as etheric dust. However, every one of the vortices continues to spin with undiminished “angular” velocity, which is twice pi divided by the period of rotation. Each particle of etheric dust (or lump) probably retains its original size and shape. Under the unusual conditions of space, the vortex balls dart about in all directions at random, like at- oms of a kinetic gas. Since their energies are in statistical equilibrium, the pressure of the ether will be the same from all sides. It then appears to be isotropic – that is having the same qualities when entered from any arbitrary direction. The illusion that ether is empty space the results. This is the antithesis, counterpart, or complement of the plenum-producing condition.

Between the two extreme conditions, the streaming ether may behave like meandering liquids of various mass-densities and may even occur in various grain- densities. (They are neither “empty” space nor uncuttable plenum.) Although the total energy of the indestructible motion remains constant, the streaming of the liquid-like ethers may undergo changes of configuration so as to exhibit all different velocities and accelerations from localized vortex motions (matter-corpuscles at rest) on the one hand, to rapid electric field streamlines (with the velocity of light) on the other hand. If we include also the vortex filaments of Maxwell’s concept of the magnetic field, and the symmetrical ether-sink field of gravitation considered recently by Dr. O.C. Hilgenberg, then it seems possible with this generalized ether theory of Fricke to explain all phenomena of Nature.

There is one property of this ether which makes possible coherence and its absence of grain-flaw, and that is a special kind of friction which only the ether possesses. This special friction that Fricke postulated controls the direction of flow but does not dissipate the energy. This may be called “quasi-friction”. It can coexist with the eternal motion of the ether. Electromagnetism would not be capable of performing any work on electrons without it.

OUR PROBLEM is to determine how the density of inertial mass affects the vibration rate (frequency). We need to find out what would happen also in evanescent materiality, in other planes of existence as well. Similar natural laws must be common to most of the planes. We have considered a theory of the ether which will be used herewith as the correct basis on which a solution of our problems will be developed.

Effects of inertial mass and pressure on sonic-wave frequency

If the ether of apparently empty space is actually an aerodynamic fluid, then the mathematics of acoustical engineering must be applicable to this ether. Then the equations for sonic waves in air can be adapted for use within the concept of optical waves in space – for instance, those above the earth atmosphere.

Now the mechanics of a sonic wave has been considered by engineers to be analogous to systems of mechanical vibration, An increase in air pressure will increase to property of the air which is related to – or rather, analogous with – the “stiffness” of a metal coil spring. This will increase the propagation of a sonic wave. The wavelengths will be made correspondingly greater, if the vibrational period remains unchanged. The reciprocal of this period, is called the “frequency”. Now as to that vibrating thing which generates the sonic disturbance, if this wave- generator should itself require a greater degree of stiffness than it had before, then it will vibrate at a higher frequency. The effect of inertial mass, on the other hand-whether this be the mass of the vibrating generator (tuning fork, or what have you) or the mass of every air molecule-should be to furnish the momentum-(mass times speed equals urge to keep on moving). Because of this momentum, the direction of motion cannot be reversed suddenly, and so this mass delays the reversal of each’ phase of the wave cycle, The frequency may be decreased, not only by lowering the stiffness value of the vibrator, but by raising the value of its mass.

Similar considerations should hold true also for vibrating atoms of matter, consisting of and immersed in Fricke’s ether.

Resonance in a mechanical system

Suppose that we have a steel coil spring attached at its upper end to a rafter and have a iron weight hanging from its lower end. With a hammer we tap the bottom of the weight, experimenting with many different frequencies of tapping. If the tapping frequency be quite high, then the mechanical shocks may cause the convolutions of “turns” of the spring to shake vertically, and as we decrease the frequency the number of nodes may decrease until the whole spring begins to respond, but the weight may prove to he too sluggish in its response.

If we reduce the number of taps per second until we are nudging the weight more slowly, then the entire system will begin to oscillate vertically with consider- able amplitude, but this response will eventually die down if we reduce the tapping frequency further to one tap per minute. Thus we find out that at some “best results” frequency, called the frequency of resonance, the spring and the weight bob up and down in step with a certain rate of tapping, that best-result rate.

An electronic equivalent circuit

Following Hertz, Marconi, and other scientists, engineers soon put the results of the new field of scientific research to practical uses, and to make further improvements. That is the specific function of an engineer, in relation to any science. In this case the new science was Electronics.

Engineers with insight and wisdom began to compare electrical and mechanical resonances with each other. Just as a weighted spring behaves as though it prefers one frequency of transmitted mechanical shock to all others, so the equivalent of this system in electronics passes AC voltage of a certain frequency but acts as a resistor of all other frequencies in the circuit. Calculations based equivalent circuits aid an engineer in his understanding of how to improve upon mechanical systems, such as cones and baffle-cabinets of a radio loudspeaker system.

A clear example of a “series circuit” is the complete connection of colored Christmas tree lamps with a wall outlet. But while the parts of a “series resonant circuit” are quite different from lamps, they too are connected in series with each other. A series resonant circuit includes a resistor, a coil, and a capacitor – sometimes only the later two – and these parts are connected in a series. Now if these parts have suitable value ratings, the series resonant circuit made from them will resonantly conduct through itself and frequency of fluctuating current we choose. This circuit is “equivalent to” a weighted spring. In this case, the capacitor and the spring play similar roles, but the coil and the iron weight seem to cater to the low frequencies, thus playing a complementary role.

Consider the value ratings for the electrical parts and for the mechanical parts. The capacitance of a “condenser” is rated in farads; in radio work the usual values of capacitors are much smaller. For use as a mechanical equivalent of capacitance we have the “compliance” of the steel spring, rated in centimeters peer dyne. A “dyne” is a unit of force, in the metric system of units. If we apply the same number of dynes of force to compress several different springs (also to stretch them) we should find that the stiffer springs will have the lesser values of compliance. The compliance is equal to the reciprocal of the stiffness, for stiffness is measured in dynes per centimeter. As to the coil and the iron weight: the inductance of a coil is rated in henrys. The mechanical analog of inductance is the inertial mass (in grams) of the suspended iron-excluding the effect of gravity, of course.

The above correlation between a weighted spring and a series resonant circuit is too simple for use as an “as if” model for description of crystal objects, Many crystals can transmit several colors of visible light. As many different frequencies of ether-wave will therefore get through the interspaces between the ions clustered in groups throughout each crystal. In order to let all those colors through, the interspace ether must act as if it were a composite network of many different series resonant circuits that are “shunted across” one another. All of their capacitances would seem to have the same value in com- mon, an extremely small fractions of a farad, if the high pressure of the ether be uniform throughout the interspaces. The series resonant circuits would then differ from one another only in inductance values, which are presumably due to various different sizes (and masses) of ambient vortices present in the interspace ether.

Kinds of density

In scientific literature, i.e. technical journals, more than one kind of “density” is mentioned. The kinds most frequently used in physics magazines “electron density” (or number of electrons per unit volume) and “energy density”, besides the mass-density. The meaning of ‘grain-density’ seems self-evident. How- ever, “vibration-density” although seldom mentioned as such, can nevertheless be expressed by associating together (in a common region) two other kinds of density: a high grain-density with a low mass density.

All BSRA discussions in which the word “density” is used, should specify what kind of density is meant. ls it mass-density? ls it grain-density? Or is it some other density, such as energy-density (work-density) or power-density? Power being the same as work divided by the time during which the work is being done, it would seem that the power-density in some instances mean work multiplied by frequency- density, and in some other instances, energy-density per vibrational cycle period. It pays to be very sure of the smallest details, and to agree upon then by convention, as this precaution will avoid repeated confusion.

In conclusion we print the following note, taken from our “Clips, Quotes, and Comments”- D-9 of May 1,1955:

Associate Lindy Millard, by reasoning from electrical analogues, has made a rigorous mathematical derivation of the following generalized basic formula for the ether itself where optical waves are being propagated:

Square root of Pressure over K x Sq. root of Mass-Density: where K is a constant that may depend on the material substance with the ether.

FREQUENCY DEPENDS ON THE INVERSE SQUARE ROOT OF MASS-DENSITY OF THE ETHER ITSELF!

This is a hit-and-run article, sans literary grace, about aurameter, and etheric objects, and thought-forms and teleportation, and the ethers and the flying Discs and what-have-you. “A” stands for Aurameter, so we begin where it seems proper; but afterward mix everything up as seems most improper. The Aurameter is a lately devised gadget intended primarily for water dowsing, but which turns out to have far more important properties – such as, for example, locating and outlining objects which can’t be seen. ^[1]

“Thoughts are things” is the sleepiest of bromides. Every spiritist and occultist is born with that spoon in his mouth whether he knows it or not. But just what, if you please, do you mean by a “thing”? In common use a thing is an object, and an object is objective, visible, and usually tangible. But since thoughts and feelings are not of this sort, how can they be called things? Obviously and QED, such talk is all mystical moonshine.

But now, suppose I visualize a milk bottle on one end of a table, a large cube on the other, and a solid brick wall across one end of the room. Then suppose some one experienced in the use of this gadget comes in and locates these mental images by feeling around with it, somewhat as a dowser does with a forked stick or a pendulum. Has the thought-form, the mental image taken on “thingness”, or has it not?

Elaborate and repeated experiments show that this feat can actually be performed. Make a mind image, place it definitely in space, and the Aurameter can find it. Touch one book in a row of 50, and the instrument will pick out the right one. We suggest, there is “something there”, just as real and objective as any visible brick or box or bottle could possibly be. We suggest, the burden of explanation is now on the skeptic. Let him explain what is happening, and he had better make it good.

But to go on from there – since we have no space here to battle with straw men.

I put an imaginary milk bottle on the table in front of me, and the aurameter man can find it. But it’s just as easy and as quick for me to put it in another room, another house, another block or city distant. I can put it anywhere I want to, provided I can visualize enough of the background, and distance makes no difference at all, per se. If my friend in Calcutta has an Aurameter and can use it, and I steadfastly visualize a black cat or a bronze Buddha in his library, and if he knows where and when to look for the something I am sending, he will be able to find it and describe its outlines.

Now, this is the projection of an image, and an image or thought is evidently a reality. That is, it has a material existence, although the matter it is made of happens to be invisible, and untouchable by our unaided hands. It is, if you please, what we call an existent in etheric matter. If you poke the positive pole of a magnet into the positive field of another magnet, you feel a strong repulsion, the push-away of like polarities. The magnetic field is an invisible, tangible entity composed of etheric stresses, but no one thinks of denying its existence. The thought form seems to have the same kind of existence, and the resistence it offers to the aurameter bob feels to the hand exactly the same as that exerted by the magnet. But before the invention of the aurameter we had no instrument (except possibly the pendulum) for measuring it.

Otherwise stated, a thought image is an etheric construct made by the operation of mind-energy on the ethers. If you don’t believe in the ethers, or in the ‘energic’ character of thought, go ahead and make your own interpretation – only, please do not fail to explain just what it is the aurameter finds and how it finds it.

In other words, try to ‘save’ the phenomena – or, don’t throw out the baby along with the bath water.

Our assumption and information and reasonable belief is, that etheric matter exists everywhere, and that there is an infinite series of ethers of increasing density, and that all of them are particulate in structure, and consequently interpenetrate. ^[2] Our so-called dense matter is really (comparatively) a rarefaction, and the enormously dense ethers pass through it like wind through a mesh with huge interstices. That makes good science and good metaphysics, once you stop to think about it, as most people will not do.

If, as is highly believable, there are etheric beings living in etheric worlds, their bodies and worlds and all that is in them will be far more dense than ours, the component particles will be thousands or millions of times smaller than our atoms and electrons, and consequently the etheric matter will be responsive to the more subtle forms of energy, that is, to thought energy. And if I visualize a pumpkin, I create said pumpkin in etheric matter, but it‘s out of my plane of visual perception. If I were in an etheric body I would be able to see it, and I could send it by my thought energy to any place I chose. And if I want to construct a flying disc, I would first think it into existence and then spot the etheric creation anywhere I wished. It’s our information and belief, that most of our space visitors get here in just that way. It is not a problem of constructing a craft out of materials known to us as matter and have it capable of flying across space and withstanding the conditions of space fight. The craft is first built out of enormously dense etheric matter, by thinking it in to form; and this etheric form is ‘teleported’ or ‘spotted’ along with crew into the upper regions of the earth’s atmosphere – the ‘trip’ of course taking no time at all. Within the Earth’s gravitational field the vibratory rates of the etheric matter are converted into the slower rate of our earth matter, and then the craft becomes visible and tangible to us. If it is true that we now have many visitors even from ‘beyond the galaxies’, hundreds and even thousands of light years distant, it must be plain that they do not get here in any craft made of earth-substances and travelling at any speed we have even conjectured, and that they do not ‘cross space’ at all in our sense of the words.

All this kind of thinking clicks well enough with both ancient and modern metaphysics, and also with much contemporary speculative science. It was talking about the aurameter that got us into all this – for the obvious reason that we now have, for the first time, a ‘gadget’ which will show the material presence of an ether-form, or thought form. Our vast ignorance of the whole concept of the ethers, is a kind of black hole of Calcutta for the western mind. We’re gadget-minded and want to see something move, or hear something click, or read numbers on a scale before we think a ‘thing’ is ‘real’. If the aurameter should be studied enough so that its evidence gets through the first layer of western ignorance and stupidity, it will be rated as 20th century achievement No. 1.

It’s still bad form, of course, to so much as mention radiesthesia in ‘orthodox’ and official scientific circles – and the aurameter comes under that classification, as a radi-sensitive device, and so will be rated even lower than the pendulum, the former ne plus ultra of childishness. But what is the twaddle of today is often the gospel of tomorrow.

This aurameter also suggests the possibility of mental communication on this plane by etheric images and symbols. It is also revealing many unknown rays, waves, vibrations – for instance, an energy stream given off from the tips of cones. It’s going to intrude into the field of psychometry and pendulum analysis generally – and it also tells us more about the human aura than is found in all the books. It is, in short, one fine notable ray of light into the black hole we just spoke about – our western ignorance of the etheric worlds and peoples.

The point is sometimes raised, that if (say) a Venusian Etherian wants to visit Terra (for to see but not to admire) he doesn’t need to think up a disc or a mile~long space ship to travel in. His body is made of etheric matter, and it responds to his will, and all he has to do is to think himself even into the most secret places of our world – and there he is. We are informed that this is quite true, leaving aside various if’s and but’s. But let us suppose that he wants to make observations and records, use instruments, maybe offset bad radiation effects, needs active cooperation by other Etherian scientists. It seems natural that he, or they, should prefer to create discs or other craft, load them with the required apparatus, transfer the whole by teleportation to some region close to the earth, and then convert to our vibration rate and so come into our field of perception.

All this is very crude and sketchy, no doubt, and sounds like amateurish scientifiction; yet I think that basically it is reasonable and plausible and fits in with the known data.

There has been a good deal of twaddle in the newspapers during the last few months, about a ‘revival’ of the ‘obsolete’ ether theory, particularly by an English scientist. But the ether concept has never been discarded. Einstein, Jeans, Eddington and many others have said so explicitly. Consider the following quotations from Eddington:

Thirty years ago there was much debate over the question of ether drag – whether the earth moving round the sun drags the ether with it. At that time the solidity of the atom was unquestioned, and it was difficult to believe that matter could push its way through the ether without disturbing it. It was surprising and perplexing to find as the result of experiments that no convection of the ether occurred. But we now realize that the ether can slip through the atc as easily as through the solar system, and our expectation is all the other way . . .

(That velocity through the ether is meaningless) does not mean that the ether is abolished. we need an ether. The physical world is not to be analyzed into isolated particles of matter or electricity with featureless interspace. We have to attribute as much character to the interspace as to the particles, and quite an army of symbols is required to describe what is going on in the interspace. We postulate ether to bear the characters of the interspace as we postulate matter or electricity to bear the characters of the particles …

In the last century it was widely believed that ether was a kind of matter, having properties such as mass, rigidity, motion, like ordinary matter… This ceased to be the orthodox view years before the advent of the relativity theory. Logically it was abandoned by the 19th century investigators who regarded matter as vortices, knots, squirts etc.,in the ether; for clearly they could not suppose that ether consisted of vortices in the ether. But it may not be safe to assume that the authorities in question were logical.

Nowadays it is agreed that ether is not a kind of matter.* Be-non-material, its properties are sui generis. We must determine them by experiment; and since we have no ground for any preconception the experimental conclusions can be accepted without surprise. Mass and rigidity such as we meet with in matter will naturally be absent in ether; but the ether will have new and definite characters of its own. In a material ocean we can say that a particular particle of water which was here a few moments ago is now over there; there is no corresponding assertion that can be made about the ether. If you have been thinking of the ether in a way which takes for granted this property of permanent identification of its particles, you must revise your conception … The ether itself is as much to the fore as it ever was, in our present scheme of the world. But velocity through the ether (is meaningless).

(Nature of the Physical World, pp. 3, 30, 31, 32)

Since the passages quoted were written subsequent to the advent of the relativity theory (and in view of later utterances by Einstein and others), the assertion that the concept of the ether has been discarded is absurd. There is, however, a matter of semantics involved in the last paragraph quoted from Eddington. He is unwilling to describe the ether as matter, since it does not possess the characters of matter as we know it – mass, rigidity etc. This is a question of definitions. If the ethers possess enormous density and consist of extremely small particles in extremely rapid motion, then their mass and rigidity will lie outside the range of our instruments – hence, by definition, we can say they are not “matter”. The point is obvious and not worth laboring, except that Eddington takes a needless plunge into mysticism by postulating a necessary but characterless X to equate with the interspaces. Incidentally, it does us no good to merely substitute the term space for ether unless space be itself a substance or stuff and not mere nothingness – which is a flatus vocis and not a concept at all.

We began by talking about the aurameter because its performances make us realize that etheric bodies are ‘real’ in a material sense, in the same way that a magnetic field is *real* ; and the quotations from Eddington show that the ether is vez; much of a ‘reality’ to the physicist, whether he calls it matter or non-matter or space or an X which can neither be kept out of his equations nor evaluated. The importance of the whole matter, for the ‘average man’ at least, is that unless he can somehow integrate the reality of the etheric worlds into his own thinking, he will never understand a host of remarkable phenomena now occurring on our own plane of existence. Precisely because of this lack of understanding, we are in grave danger of a period of public panic and world-wide confusion. This danger is not merely a matter of being scared witless by “fireballs” and “discs” and nameless flaming monsters of the skies. It is a most ancient and rational occult teaching, that all the life of our world, and all ‘material objects, and the whole of Nature as known to us, originated in the etheric worlds – the true homeland of the human race. Furthermore, it is the personal conviction of many of us that probably the only hope for humanity now lies in friendly contact and cooperation with the etheric peoples, many of whom are, we now believe, excarnate humans operating from etheric rather than astral levels.

For the last five years we have been saying things similar to this, and other and wiser folk have been saying it all down the course of human history. We do not keep repeating them in any hope of ‘enlightening humanity’, but only by way of making a kind of gesture which may call the attention of a few, who may then proceed as they will, each on his own path of understanding.

In view of our reference to Natalli (note to page 2) we may be permitted to introduce a quotation from him. Natalli is a 16th century astronomer who has long been communicating through the deep-trance mediumship of Mark Probert. (This medium, by the way, has almost no knowledge of technical and scientific subjects). The Natalli Control stated, early in March 1952:

“If we look at densities as blending slowly we arrive at a density which will be to all intents homogeneous” (i.e., by successive division of the constituent particles of matter). “But this is not really the case. By basing on the quantum theory each state is periodical a period behaviour of the atoms. This period state can only be conceived of by thinking in this manner. The action of the atom in each grade of density is not a stable condition, but rather a kind of blinking, in lawful sequence. In each passing fraction of time this a different form of motion. Action taking place in one density will cause another form of action in another density. It is this action which creates what you call form.

“Now, we wonder where the atom is, in the fraction of time when it is not in action. There is a time vacuum existing between the peri-states of motion. We have a cause~and-effect in play and spanning the gulf of the time interval. There is a stream of force passing between the two densities. Due to the fact that we cannot ever get to a state of nothingness (by successive divisions) the field between the time intervals we may call a play going on between the two – between the proton and the neutron. They exchange energies until there is a kind of absorption of one of them. Both are sending off energy, and the energy of one is picked up by other bodies. You have a complete breakdown of the atomic body, and it pours itself across this time vacuum into another dimension, where in forming an atomic structure it is moving at a different rate of speed. It may lose or gain electronic bodies in the new dimension and will create a web-like structure with other atoms to form a solid.

“The time vacuum lies in the exchange of neutron and proton in which one of these has absorbed the energy of the other. In that moment you have a time vacuum . . .

“The fractions of time are not really as we perceive them; the notion is so fast that we cannot make any estimate. But there is a pause in this time field that is a complete nothingness. This is basically a heat action and could be thought of according to a dimension of time as a magnetic or electromagnetic field according to the time interval between. We can say that it is magnetic or electrical or electro-magnetic, or that it is pure heat, depending largely on its use in any particular dimension of time. A passing point that is without atomic structure. The atom pours itself out into another dimension of time, across the time field. This is space-time, or a space vacuum between the nucleus and the electron.” ^[3]

The electrical theory of Maxwell was based on the assumption that when a body was electrified something in the nature of a displacement passed from the body into the ether, and from the ether to some other material object or objects said to be electrified.

That the displacement was not material, that is had no weight, went without saying, for with the most delicate chemical balance no difference in weight could be detected. lt, therefore, had to partake of an ether-like displacement because the ether has no weight.

Maxwell conceived the idea that is was this mysterious displacement, by an unrevealed physical mechanism, that caused electrified bodies to be attracted or repelled according to the well known material Newtonian laws of mechanics.

Whereas, the electrical displacement is intangible as it were, because it involves the ether only, forces always very visibly manifested at the material bounding surfaces of the ether were conceived to take place by virtue of a special displacement mechanism which Maxwell assumed. This displacement mechanism was considered to be located in the ether itself rather than in the electrified material bodies.

Forces there must be in the ether, but it is necessary to remember that we can make sure of their existence only by mechanical reactions of the ether upon material bodies. When the forces refer wholly to the ether they are designated as “generalized” forces. Thus, although an electromotive force is regarded as setting up a flux of electric displacement this force cannot be considered a true force in the Newtonian sense, for matter is not involved, except indirectly. The mechanical of Newtonian forces that are observable on electrical bodies always imply matter, Electrical instruments are employed to measure E.M.F.’s (potentials) and currents, but it is very obvious that what were really measuring are the reactions of the ether upon material bodies and not the forces that act wholly and entirely on the parts of the medium itself.

The question can arise whether electricity as such can exist apart from matter. Heaviside is decidedly of the opinion that is cannot. We know that like charges repel each other and therefore the functions of the material bounding surfaces of the ether appears to keep the like elemental charges together. Just how this property is maintained is at once one of the mysteries and distinguishable properties of matter.

In the newer theory of Lorentz, electrification of displacement is said to be due to electrons. In the first place it is difficult to see how any portion of electricity can manifest itself except by a material reaction which can be accounted for a Newtonian force being set up. Yet single negative electrons have been observed. Again is the electron or atom of electricity were of the imponderable ether substance then there is difficulty accounting for the elemental electrical charge keeping itself intact; for even an electron is supposed to have dimensions. It was from this that Heaviside foretold that the observable electron would be found to have a material nucleus. It would also seem to nullify the earlier electric particle hypothesis of Maxwell.

Strange to say in attempting to form a physical picture of electrical displacement. Maxwell himself imagined a sort of purely ether particle which bears a very close resemblance to Lorentz’s electron particle. However, such makeshift devises, for such they are, do not by any means explain how mechanical energy can be converted into electrical energy of how electrical energy, such as the electromagnetic light from the Sun, can be transmitted through space to be thereafter transformed into work in the service of man, or how to interpret matter in the terms of ether.

Both Lorentz and Maxwell imagined their ultimate electrical particles to be of such a nature that, in what are called dielectrics or insulators, the electrons are capable of moving only a short distance from their normal state of equilibrium; whereas in conductors such as copper, the electrons were considered to be free and capable of being set in motion by appropriate ethereal or as we now express it- electromotive forces. Such forces, as has already been indicated above, are not, to be confounded with the mechanical forces such as pressure or inertia. Yet when a conductor passes through a state of the ether called a magnetic field, the electrons in the conductor are assumes to be impelled in a certain direction. So far as electrons are concerned, it is electromagnetic force that causes the electrons to travel through what are really the large-sized pores of the material; but so far as the copper or material conductor is concerned it is a Newtonian mechanical force or pull that will be found necessary to be applied to set up the electronic displacement.

In the dielectric or insulating medium of a condenser the electrons are considered tied, as it were, to the material atoms or molecules of the insulating medium. They are not supposed capable of extended migratory movement from the individual atom. Thus for an alternating E.M.F. large current volumes can be set up but cannot however, be maintained uni-directionally to any considerable extent. Of course, in conductors this limitation is not present and the electrons are free to travel in a complete physical circuit.

The question can also be raised as to how an alternating current can be maintained when there is nothing but the ether between the plates of a condenser. Would such a medium constitute a perfect insulator? The answer for an alternating E.M.F. is, “No.” In fact, besides the Lorentz electrons, with, however, a material nucleus added, one must, because of this, fall back on a true Maxwellian, purely ethereal displacement. According to modern electrons theory the true Maxwellian, purely etheric displacement is always present in a dielectric, but superposed upon it in material media is an electronic displacement, with a material nucleus. The original Maxwellian displacement was structurally undefined. In insulators the electrons are tied, but in material conductors the electrons are free. It would be expected that since the electrons have a material core that these elemental charges should be associated with material media, but the true ether displacement currents of Maxwell, in which the material core is absent entirely, offers considerable difficulties to our understanding or rather visualization.

In the older theory, such as that of Ampere, the current flowing in a conductor was considered to be altogether distinct from the current flowing in the condenser. It was Maxwell who insisted, however, that the condenser current inside the medium itself must set up magnetic effects equivalent absolutely to those set up in a conductor of like current capacity.

Nowadays the conductor current of Maxwell’s mysterious days is pictured as being due to an electronic stream of particles having a material nucleus, but the old purely ethereal condenser current of Maxwell has still held its ground but superposed upon the current notion is the one in which, for material dielectrics. Electrons are in addition considered to be displaced to a limited extent just as in the old Maxwellian ether displacement current.

In considering the manner in which light reaches us from the sun, since this is understood to be an electromagnetic wave phenomena, it would appear to be really of the nature of a true Maxwellian (or pure Lorentzian) character. That is to say the light waves in leaving the sun pass out like straight line streamers of a reeled off link chain in all directions. The one set of links in a plane, see Fig. 1, represent the displacement currents of electricity, which Maxwell pictured as due to flux of pure ether particles in such a circuit.

On the other hand the links looping the first set of links in a plane perpendicular to the latter, represent the closed paths of magnetic disturbances which Maxwell considered was due to what he called “idler” ether particles. Now in considering electromagnetic waves set up by an aerial in wireless telegraphy, the original displacement loops are not considered to lie wholly in the ether, as the must do, when electric waves in the nature of light are sent out by the sun.

In wireless work such displacement loops are partly true Maxwellian (i.e. they consist of a pure ethereal displacement in ether) and partly what one might call Lorentzian, or modified Lorentzian, because a portion of the loop passes through the earth. That part which passes through the earth would be due to electrons according to modern theory, whereas the remaining part in the ether, or air, would only be due to electrons if the air was what is called ionized; otherwise the actual electrical displacement in the ether part of the circuit would have to be considered pure Maxwellian.

The difference apparently between a Maxwellian ether particle and a Lorentzian electron is that Lorentz’s electron is supposed to account for the electrical conductivity in solids, liquids, and gases or what is called ionization, whereas Maxwell’s ether particle is supposed to account for the normal ethereal conductivity.

It may come AS A “SHOCK” to realize that our very life depends on electricity. Not only does your body operate on changing electrical potentials, but the essential structure of the universe is based on fundamental electric charges, fields, and waves. Nature’s electrical generators are most evident in piezoelectricity, static electricity, and atmospheric electricity. The sheer, raw power of electricity unleashes its fury daily in thousands of lightning bolts. The magnitude of the volts behind these bolts can reach a startling 100 million between the ground and the base of a thunder-cloud.^[1]

Science has accumulated a lot of facts about electricity in terms of electron generation, electron flow, electrical current, and voltage sources. The classical model of the atom depicts the electron as a suborbital vehicle or carrier of negative charge. The nuclear proton is arbitrarily assigned a positive charge. The opposite polarity charges are said to be equal in field strength. The Neutron lacks charge or is a composite particle (wavicle/vorticle) of balanced charges.

In physics or electrical engineering the source of all electrical effects is the electric charge. The magnitude of the force between two electric charges in vacuum is given by Coulomb’s Law: the force is directly proportional to Q, and Q2 which are the two values of charge measured in coulombs and inversely proportional to the area of permittivity of free space (equal to 8.854 x 10^-12 farad/meter) times the square of the distance between center of the charges in meters. The direction of the force is along the line of the two charges. If the two charge are of the same polarity, the force repels the charges from each other. The fundamental mechanism behind this is not explained. It is just a statement of observation.^[2]

The fundamental charged particle is the electron which has a charge of 1.60210 x 10^-19 and a mass of 9.10908 x 10^-31 kilograms. A charge has a region of influence that is defined as a field. The field permeates the space around a charge or is a special alteration of space itself. In classical physics, the electron has a radius of 10″ cm. The negative charge was considered distributed around this minute sphere. Physicists then calculated that the negative charge on one part of the electron spheroid would repel the negative charge of another spherical section and cause the electron to explode. In quantum field theory, the electron is considered as a point-particle. Of course with a point-particle, the electrical potential reaches infinity at dead center. Another dilemma.

Other fields that permeate or alter space are gravitational and electromagnetic fields. The source of these fields resides in a mass or object that itself may be a fundamental field or alteration of space. A yet undetermined relationship exists between the electromagnetic and gravitational fields. In the attempt to unify the forces into one theoretical construct is now referred to as a Grand Unified Theory. A more grandiose term is: Theory of Everything. This is, of course, the ultimate in human hubris.

The nature of electrical charge is a mystery. We make use of it everyday. But the common facts about electricity are not complete and anomalous electrical behavior has been noted by several experimenters. These anomalies could lead us to an even better understanding concerning the nature of electricity. In order to limit this discussion, I will cite a few anomalous electrical effects that produce contra-gravitational force.

Dr. Francis Nipher, once professor of physics at Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri performed a modification of the Cavendish experiment in 1916-17. Cavendish used a delicate torsion balance to determine the density of the earth. Nipher used a one-inch lead ball suspended with an untwisted silk thread approximately 180 cm long and centered inside a 5-inch-square box or Faraday Shield. A horizontal slit in the box’s side permitted Dr. Nipher to observe deflections. He placed an insulated 10-inch-diameter lead sphere next to the iron box. A copper wire connected the large sphere to the metal box to keep them at the same potential. The large sphere was mounted on hard rubber plate. When the large sphere was electrified using a high-voltage influence generator, the normal gravitational attraction of the two spheres was reversed and the small suspended sphere was repelled from the larger by about twice the deflection caused by gravity. Reversing polarity did not alter the effect. When substituting low-voltage AC in place of the H-V influence generator, a repulsion effect was still observed, but one of smaller value.^[3]

Mr. George S. Piggot conducted even more amazing experiments in 1904 using a powerful electrostatic generator. He made use of an apparatus that had a rotating spherical electrode mounted on a stand. He was able to suspend, against gravity, small metal balls by means of a strong electric field. Extending for about 5 cm. around the perimeter of the objects was a mysterious dark band. He also succeeded in suspending nonmetallic objects such as cork and wood. These objects would oscillate up and down around the center of the field. An improved Wimshurst generator supplied the spherical electrode with approximately 500,000 volts of potential.

Townsend Brown’s experiments with suspended charged capacitors also demonstrated a contra-gravity effect. When the capacitor was charged, it exhibited a forward thrust towards the positive pole. When the capacitor was mounted vertically on a beam balance, the positive pole vectored thrust exhibited a lifting effect counter to gravity. This did not involve the expulsion of charged particles to produce thrust as in an ion rocket. Brown felt he discovered a principle of electro-gravitation.

If positive and negative charges are equipotential, then what would cause an unbalanced force between charges? If we lived in a sea of predominantly negative charge, then the action of positive attraction and negative repulsion would work mutually to produce a thrust vector in the direction of the positive pole. That would constitute a testable hypothesis.

John Searl is said to have employed an unique method of defying gravity using a continuous rotation of cylindrical magnets around a magnetic annulus. A very high electrostatic charge is said to develop between the rollers and the ring producing the Searl levity effect. His generator supposedly levitated of its own accord and generated a pink corona, however, this story has never been verified, or the effect reproduced. However, the Searl disk is claimed to have had a very high potential difference between the center section and rim of the disk, an effect actually noted in the de Palma N Machine. Is the Biefield-Brown effect, as discovered by Townsend Brown, incorporated within the operating principles of these rotating devices? Can a powerful electrostatic field produce an artificial gravitational field or modify the ambient gravity field?

It is said that the Austrian “Water Wizard” Victor Schauberger built a flying saucer during World War II for the Germans. Schauberger’s device rotated fluids in a hyperbolic vortex that generated high electrical potentlals and a consequent levity effect.

The claimed results of these experiments should cause us to ponder and reconsider the current theoretical dogma regarding the laws of electricity and the nature of electrical charge. This should lead us into further physical experimentation to discover the truth of the matter.

The problem of the nature of electrical charge is tied to the problem of space. Einstein considered the concept of field when thinking of problems in electrodynamics. He rejected the idea of the existence of a form of matter called “aether” especially because it reinvoked the idea of an absolute frame of reference. On the basis of the general theory of relativity, space as opposed to what fills space, which is dependent on coordinates, has no separate existence. Space, in the general theory, is not space without a field, but a special case of the gravitational field. Thus, Einstein concludes, there is no such thing as an empty space, i.e. a space without field. In his attempts at a Unified Field Theory, Einstein attempted to reconcile the gravitational held and the electromagnetic field. Einstein conceived space as part of a higher dimension which causes space to warp and bend in the presence of mass. However, this invests space with the properties of a solid. A solid can warp, bend, and convey waves.^[5]

In quantum field theory, the electron was reduced to a zero-radius point-particle. This raised the problem of infinite energy. This problem was handled through the mathematical technique of re-normalization. To circumvent the problems found in quantum field theory, string theory has been introduced. In string theory, particles like the electron are one-dimensional strings, perhaps joined in closed loops, with different modes of vibration. Again, higher dimension spaces are invoked to maintain a mathematical consistency with experiment.

There are scientists who find these exotic physical theories wanting, and the lack of mechanical models a hindrance to a real understanding of particle physics.

One thing that hints that our mathematical only models of space, particles, and charge are wrong are certain experiments in particle physics. Dr. Alan D. Krisch performed proton-proton collision experiments using the Zero Gradient Synchrotron at Argonne National Laboratories and found that when two protons spin in the same sense and collide, they scatter as expected. When the two protons spin in an anti-parallel sense, they do not deflect, regardless of mutual like charges, but appear through each other like ghosts! These protons are behaving like vortex rings in a fluid medium. Antiparallel vortices will not repel, but attract each other. Charge polarity seems to arbitrarily depend on spin sense and mutual interaction.

New ether theories have been proposed to account for the existing experimental phenomena and produce visualizable models. These theories should also predict new phenomena that, when subjected to experiment, should be in agreement with prediction. These theories postulate that space is permeated with a fluid medium of energy or that space itself is composed of a fluid. Its almost as if the universe itself were a giant liquid drop of undifferentiated fluid that differentiated by virtue of its internal dynamics.

William M. Honig of the Western Australian Institute of Technology has proposed a Grand Unified Theory based on a physical model for vacuum space consisting of the superposition of oppositely charged continuous fluids. Models for the photon, electron, neutrino, and proton consist of unique variations in the relative densities of the fluids and their flow patterns.

Eric J. Lerner in his recent book, The Big Bang Never Happened, points to the Krisch experiments and his own calculations to state that particles formed from vortices in some fluid is certainly worth investigating.

The Indian nuclear engineer, Parmahamsa Tewari, has developed a complete theory of space vortices based on a substantial space medium possessing non-material properties. The electron, in Tewari’s model, is a spherical vortex with a void core. The flow of the medium in a circulating motion at velocity c produces the energy we call charge. An electron will have a clock-wise vortex (negative charge) and a positron an anti-clockwise vortex (positive charge).

In my own theorizing I believe the electron is producing an outwardly-directed pressure gradient on the surrounding space medium due to its vortex rotation. This pressure gradient is identical to the electrostatic field. According to the law of Continuity for a moving stream of fluid, the density times the cross sectional area of the flow times the velocity must always be constant. Therefore, if the static pressure of the space medium is equivalent to gravitation, and the dynamic pressure is equivalent to electric field, then as the dynamic pressure increases, the static pressure decreases, always maintaining a constant. This establishes an inverse relationship between gravitation and electricity. If there is pressure along one axis, then there is tension along the orthogonal axis. These lines of tension could be equivalent to a magnetic field.

Some of the ideas expressed here are only rudimentary and introductory and are designed to stimulate further thinking with regards to unexplained physical phenomena. Why do Brown’s capacitors exhibit thrust? How does a high-voltage field cause levitation? Can we tap the dynamic energy flows of space? When we start to consider these questions perhaps we will move closer to a greater understanding of the nature of electricity and the ether of space.

Round Robin (Vol. 11, 3/6; Sept./Oct. 1955)

In a recent issue of the Round Robin there was a report of a Mark Probert seance which dealt with the existence of an ether. Although the reasoning was not very clear to me, still the conclusions seemed to be correct. The existence of an ether is not a question that can be answered by a simple “yes” or “no”, and when I stated in my book on “The Ether and its Vortices” that there can hardly be any question as to the existence of an ether, I meant a dynamic or turbulent ether and not the quiescent stationary ether of the 19th century.

The Michelson-Morley experiment of 1887 did not disprove the existence of any and every ether, but only of a quiescent ether that is stationary relative to the solar system, and which would produce an ether drift of sufficient magnitude to show up in the experiment. The correct explanation for the Michelson-Morley experiment seems to have been given by George Stokes, who considered the ether as being carried along by the earth‘s gravitational field; but Stokes theory was rejected by the physics profession on the ground that it was contradicted by astronomical aberration. It seems, however, that astronomical aberration does not necessarily disprove Stokes’ theory, because even if the ether adjacent to the earth is carried along by the earth’s gravitational field, there would still be astronomical aberration further out in space.

Since the gravitational field of the earth is tied up with that of the sun, it would be more correct to speak of the combined gravitation: field of the earth and the sun, and such a combined field would still be stationary relative to the earth, in complete agreement with the M.M. experiment.

There still remains to be considered, however, the rotation of the earth on its axis. Since the earth’s axis is approximately perpendicular to the plane of its orbit about the sun, it necessarily follows that since the earth’s gravitational field remains tied up with that of the sun, the ether around the earth cannot partake of the rotation of the earth on its axis, but should produce an ether drift of about one-third of a mile per second at the equator, and less elsewhere. That such an ether drift actually exists was proved by the Michelson-Gale experiment in 1925, further details of which will be found in my book.

The finite velocity of light proves that the ether must have mass and inertia, but how is that possible with an ether which is not granular or corpuscular? In my book I advanced the proposition that inertia is really a property of motion rather than a property of matter, because motion without inertia would be a contradiction in terms. Inertia merely means continuity of motion, and without continuity there could not be any motion. Continuity must be either toward and from infinity or around in a circle or other closed path, and wherever it is in a closed path it will appear as localized inertia, which is just another name for mass. With mass thus accounted for, it is not difficult to account for matter, because matter is nothing but a highly concentrated form of localized mass. Less concentrated forms of localized mass are electric and magnetic fields, but this does not include the gravitational field, which is something very different.

Similar considerations are also applicable to the ether. Any ether which actually exists must have mass and inertia, because an ether without mass and inertia is inconceivable. If, however, we are correct in our interpretation of mass and inertia as properties of motion, then it necessarily follows that the only kind of ether which can conceivably exist is a dynamic or turbulent ether. The perfectly quiescient and stagnant ether of the 19th century was therefore a theoretical impossibility.

The concept of motion forms an adequate basis for everything in nature, provided we are not too inquisitive as to what it is that moves. We do not need to let this difficulty embarrass us, however, because physicists in dealing with wave mechanics have been confronted with the same difficulty, but have not been seriously deterred thereby. It seems to be the general opinion among 20th century physicists that the concept of motion is complete in itself, even in the apparent absence of anything that moves. On the other hand the 19th century physicists would have pronounced such a view untenable.

It seems that the solution of this problem is to be found in a compromise between the 19th and 20th century viewpoints. Motion with out anything that moves is indeed inconceivable, but if We assume that the world has always existed and never had any beginning, then there never was a time when we would have been confronted with any such difficulty. The world at any instant is adequately accounted for by considering it as the result of the world at the instant immediately preceding. Since continuity is a necessary property of motion, the existence of an ether in motion at the present instant necessarily presupposes the existence of a similar ether in motion at the instant immediately preceding, and wherever there is an ether in motion there must also be mass by virtue of that motion.

Round Robin (Vol. 11, 4/6; Nov./Dec. 1955)

In my previous article on “The Existence of an Ether”, the subject was treated from an astronomical standpoint, and it will now be considered from the ‘standpoint of the Sagnac experiment which is just as important as the Michelson-Morley experiment, although not as well-known as the latter.

The Sagnac experiment was first performed in 1915 in France in an effort to disprove Einstein’s theory of relativity, and with minor variations has been repeated several times since then, but always with the same positive results. It consisted of splitting a beam of monochromatic light into two component beams which were sent in opposite directions around the periphery of a turntable by means of mirrors until they met again at the opposite end of the table so as to produce interference fringes which were recorded on a photographic plate. When the table with all the apparatus on it was slowly rotated the interference fringes were shifted by an amount equal to what the shift would be if the light waves traveled in a medium that was stationary relative to the earth. As long as the table remained stationary, the light waves in the two component beams would traverse the same distance, namely half the circumference of the table. As soon as the table was rotated, however, the light waves of one beam would have to traverse a greater distance than those of the other beam because the photographic plate on which the interference fringes were recorded would then be moving toward the light waves of one beam and away from those of the other beam.

Since the time of travel in each beam must remain the some, any difference in the lengths of the two paths would have to result in a displacement of the interference fringes in the one direction or the other.

The same positive result was obtained regardless of whether the source of light was carried by the turntable or was on a stationary support adjacent to the turntable, which rules out any attempted explanation based on the movement of the source of light. The only possible explanation for the shifting of the interference fringes when the table is rotated is that the light waves of the two component beams travel in a medium, namely an “ether”, which is stationary relative to the earth, or more specifically relative to the earth’s gravitational field, and which does not partake to any measurable extent of the rotation of the turntable.

The Sagnac experiment is therefore in complete agreement with George Stokes’ interpretation of the Michelson-Morley experiment because the gravitational field of the turntable is negligible in comparison with the gravitational field of the earth.

AEROFORMS are flying discs, “saucers,” mutants or indescripts, and best understood with respect to their origin and nature as being EMERGENTS: that-is, they emerge on to our plane of perception from a space-time frame of reference which is different from ours. This process may also be described as a conversion of energy and a change of vibratory rates.

That this is so is obviously suggested by the phenomena themselves; since physical matter as we know it could not withstand the speed, temperature and strain imposed by the observed operatons of the discs and other forms. This does not conflict with the apparent composition of the “landed” discs.

When the energy conversion takes place, the aeroform becomes visible and tangible. It appears to be and definitely is what we call solid substance, and so remains until the vibratory rate is again converted. The “steel” of a landed disc is an etheric steel and its copper is etheric copper — since the prototypes of all our metals exist in etheric matter; nevertheless, chemical analysis has shown certain radical differences. The conversion process amounts to materialisation and dematerialisation (“mat and demat”). “Demat,” on our plane of perception, would be “mat” for any consciousness functioning on the etheric level, and vice versa.

Just as there is a spectrum of sound and of colour (ending in sounds we cannot hear and colours we cannot see), so there is also a spectrum of tangibility, ending in forms of matter which are too dense to be touched. The ordinary matter of our plane is a rarefaction, and the interspaces between the nucleus and the electrons are relatively enormous. The extremely dense matter of the ethers passes through earth substance freely and almost without friction. But if the vibratory rate of an etheric object is slowed down, it becomes less dense and enters our field of perception.

[With reference to our use of the word density; this word is used in different senses by physicists and demands definition for which we cannot here afford space.]

Etheric matter, on account of its density, is subject to the play of many subtle forces, including the energic activity of thought. Any form or object of which the mind can conceive can be brought into existence by mental action, and controlled by the same means. Etheric objects are in every way as “real” as those of our own world. And there is abundant experimental evidence for the control of “mind over matter” on our own plane of perception.

The foregoing paragraph applies also to the bodies of Etherian people. Our own bodies are truly made by our minds; we identify ourselves with them and control them. The Etherian makes his own body in a somewhat similar way, but quickly and easy, and makes it in any size and form he chooses. By the same principle, he can produce the form of a sphere, a cylinder, a cube, a disc or “saucer” — and any desired vibrations of colour and sound.

Whether the Etherian people are “human” or not depends entirely on one’s definition of the word human. So far as we know, they are not excarnate humans and have not lived on our planet, though often visiting it. It is a cardinal mistake to assume that their bodies, and the other ships created by them, are necessarily the same as we have seen them, when they withdraw to their own planes of existence. It is a cardinal mistake to assume that they are all of the same kind and “race,” or of the same moral character and evolutionary development.

The “vehicle” of an Etherian, whether his body or his “ship” is thus essentially a thought-form (as our bodies are also) and a thought form can be positioned anywhere. The problems of space travel as we conceive them do not exist for him — as implied by the opening paragraph. By altering his vibratory rates the Disc Etherian penetrates our seas and the substance of our globe as easily as he does our atmosphere. All the aeroforms pass through each other – on occasion – and through our dwellings at will, and are (and always have been) invisibly present in great numbers.

The Etherians themselves – or entities purporting to be such – have given the following accounting: That the first step in constructing huge space craft (“mother ships” and others) is to isolate a cube of space, or ether, to a very low vibration frequency. This etheric substance is then given the desired form, and the proper equipment is placed within it, according to its proposed station and operation. This work is done mainly by mental means: the Etherians make use of machines and apparatus, but these also are etheric constructions.

Teleportation

When the “ship” is completed, it is positioned by mental means – “teleportation” – in any desired location, as, say, in the vicinity of our earth. So far, neither the ship nor any of these operations would be visible to us. But if the frequency of the etheric matter is then converted to other specific rates, the ship will, or may, become visible and tangible to our senses. But there is NO “crossing of space” involved at any time. There is simply a change of location — and this is equivalent to a change of frequency or conversion of vibratory rates.

This last principle cannot be reiterated too often. It is basic to any understanding of the whole mass of the aeroform phenomena. These huge craft may be miles in dimension, or even of planetary size — hence the feasibility of an “evacuation of the planet,” if necessary.

Under what conditions these huge objects, hanging hundreds of miles overhead, are converted to a frequency rate perceptible to us is, of course, unknown. But discs and other forms discharged by the mother ships are obviously so converted, in order to operate under gravitational and magnetic conditions peculiar to our planet. Or it may be a part of the overall plan that those objects be made visible and tangible to us, as part of the education of earth people.

Interpretation

Reverting to the concept of “emergence,” it may be helpful to quote the following illustration: Suppose we have a series of concentric balls, one within another like the “Chinese eggs.” Call the central ball No. 1 and the others Nos. 2, 3, 4, etc. For any given point on, say, the sixth ball, there will be a corresponding spot on both the inside and the outside of ball No. 5 and of ball No. 7 — and so on all the other balls. Consider that each ball has its own vibration rate. Then, if you wish to move any object on, say, ball 6 and place it on ball 5 or 7, you simply change its vibration accordingly. The object will then be located in a new place. It will not have to “pass over” any intervening space — it simply comes into existence in a new location. A change of frequency is equivalent to a change of location.

Such a statement as “I am here” means simply that I am “tuned in” to objects, sounds, and colours of my surroundings. If this receptivity were altered so that I “tuned out,” the environment would disappear, but would be replaced by a different one unless the change destroyed me. This would be a spacetime operation and a change of location without transit of space.

Contemporary distrust of the concept of the ether is unjustified and must be left to physicists who, apparently, do not read the literature of their own subject.

So far the whole mass of material on the aeroforms, with some tentative exceptions, has not produced an over-all interpretation which is at once intelligible science and sound metaphysics. Yet the interpretation reported by us and here summarised is steadily gaining ground, and we bespeak its thoughtful consideration on its own merits. It will be expanded and altered in details but it is basically correct.

In the fall of 1951 the former director of BSRA, Meade Layne, received a diagram and description of an untried electronic device whose avowed purpose was to stimulate ESP. Meade published this in the Nov—Dec 1951 Round Robin. Some of the Associates, and no doubt others, made haphazard attempts to construct a working model; but only one, Associate Ed John of San Francisco, reported any positive success with it. He claimed it worked to some degree with everyone on whom he tried it; but his report was so at variance with the failure of all the rest that nothing was really settled, one way or the other Apparently no systematic attempt was made to calibrate the variable condenser, so that uniform responses of the brain for different settings could be predicted. Nor did anyone come up with the maximum and minimum frequencies of the coils, as specified in the original diagram or in Ed John’s modifications. So in effect, in this year of 1960, we are starting from scratch in reviving Project Hermes; though your present director of BSRA hopes that electronics have come so far in eight years that the original questions can be easily answered now.

Meade Layne’s INTRODUCTION

“The manuscript of Project Hermes comes to BSRA Hdqrs. from one of our most gifted Associates, and is submitted for our information. Readers will note the discretion and reserve with which the author expresses himself. In fact, he advises against publication, lest in event experiments should come to nothing, the BSRA ‘might appear a bit ridiculous’. But the BSRA publications are a clearing house for novel and may—be productive ideas in the field of Borderland research; their value can be determined only by experiment and cooperation — which in turn implies that they must be made known. The fact that we publish them implies nothing except that the BSR Director thinks them interesting and worth examination; and the author of the Hermes MS himself makes no other claims. He is, however, well known to many of our Associates, and his identity would command a respectful hearing for anything he has to offer.”

Associate R.M. Holland’s NOTES and COMMENTS

“This circuit and other information was given to me via paranormal means, by a technical source with whom I have been in contact at intervals for the past 4 or 5 years. Some of the information from this source has proven valuable, but caution much of the other information received proved to be worthless. Therefore, do not place too high a value on it, or assume its correctness, unless or until actual tests can be made.

“The device is supposedly a reproduction of an ancient communication instrument — one form (there are several others) of what Dick Shaver called ‘telaug’ in his writings. Its main use by the ancients was to communicate telepathically with others on the same here—living planet; our informant says, however, that it can also be used to communicate with entities on other planes, if properly tuned. This particular form is very short range under ordinary circumstances. That is: its effect will influence only persons or entities in the immediate vicinity, when used singularly. If, however, two persons each have such a device, and the devices are tuned to each other, they will work over fairly long distances. The actual method of operation is to create a controlled vibrational field which will sensitize those within its influence. It may be noted that several persons have apparently been sensitized to telepathic contact by wild radiations from electric arcs, etc. Electric welders and old time spark—gap radio operators were usually regarded as a peculiar lot and would confess they got a lot of screwy ideas while in the influence of the arc.

“The original device was made of components which have no modern counterparts and could not be reproduced in a large lab— oratory except at prohibitive cost. The effort during the. past few years has therefore been to find commercially available components which would reproduce the same effect as the original. This has involved (on my part) the securing of technical characteristics on hundreds of electronic components, which my contact would check for the particular effect he wished to secure. (This explains the apparent familiarity of the communicator with our components.) It must be emphasized, however, that my contact has no facilities for actual construction, and that he has evolved the circuit entirely from the theoretical point of view.

“Comment on the actual circuit: Parts (1) and (4) are a conventional oscillator circuit. Parts (3), (7) and (8) would be a conventional radio—phone modulator circuit if (7) was a by—pass condenser, and (8) was a microphone. As it stands, it is over my head. Communicator is very insistent that nothing but a variable reluctance unit will work at (8). The (2), (5) and (6) setup at the lower left is also over my head. I cannot visualize what effect they would have. Note that the tube is connected so as to form a triode, but communicator insists that it is essential that the pentode be used, as all triodes which I told him about lacked the proper characteristics.

“I cannot guarantee to secure any further information which any may desire, as contact with my communicators is at his option, not mine. That is: I have no way of contacting him, but must wait until he decides to contact me.”

This was Associate Holland’s explanation and summary of how he received the original material prior to its release in 1951. Then, in March 1952, Mr. Holland summarized additional information which had come to light, both from his own sources and from those Associates who had written to Meade and to him of their efforts.

A TELEPATHIC COMMUNICATING DEVICE

“Project Hermes is a telepathic communicating device. While primarily intended for use between persons on this plane, it can if tuned to the proper frequency, reach any intelligent entity on any plane. The information concerning it was given, by para—normal means, by friends on another planet and plane.

“It creates a high frequency field which will sensitize individuals to such contacts by stimulating some ordinarily unused portion of the brain. There may also be some heterodyning involved. The frequency used is one which carries only a short distance and is easily stopped by solid objects. Thus it will ordinarily influence only those in the immediate vicinity. If, however, it is tuned to the exact frequency of another similar instrument, or to the natural mental frequency of some other being, then by the law of resonant rapport its range becomes theoretically unlimited. For the intended use, however, exact resonance is not necessary and quite a large frequency tolerance is permissible. In some cases it may be necessary to make slight tuning adjustments in order to produce identical results in different individuals.

‘It should be understood that the information was not presented as a fully and immediately workable device, but merely as a basis from which to begin experimentation. The actual device used by the communicators could not be exactly duplicated by us because the parts are not to be had here. On the other hand electronic components available here are not available to the communicators, so they can do no experimental work with them. Such would be useless even if it were possible. Due to differences in the natural mental ‘wave lengths’, a device suitable for them would produce no results for us, and vice versa. They have attempted to select components which are commercially available to us, and theoretically work out a circuit which will produce essentially the same result as the device used by them. They do not claim to be infallible, and some changes may be necessary.

“While many persons may be interested in the possibility of communication with entities on other planes, the communicators regard this of minor value. They are, however, particularly anxious to have it developed and universally used as a personal communication device between persons on this plane. This would eventually result in the greatest and most rapid changes for the better in our social, political, economic and human relationship systems this world has ever seen.

“Crime, sin, duplicity, and other unworthy deeds flourish only in secrecy and anonymity. Few are so depraved as to commit such deeds in the full light. In any form of telepathic communication the minds of both parties are laid bare. It is impossible to conceal any evil or low intent. If a man wanted to be a stinker; but he could no longer, as now, masquerade as the Honorable So—and— so from here—or—there. His own awareness of his intent and purpose would be so vividly in his mind that anyone who contacted him would instantly be aware of it. Few could stand the resulting contempt.

“If, on the other hand, the device were developed secretly and monopolized by any group or nation, it could result in the greatest evil the world has ever known, since it could be used to hypnotically control the thinking of others. It is essential, therefore, that the information be so widely distributed that it will be impossible for any one person or nation to monopolize it.

ALTERNATE COILS— The only experimenter who secured any results made his coils as follows: (1) & (2), 10 turns on each primary and secondary of #17 silver wire, i in. diameter of coil, and spaced to occupy a total length of about j inch. (3) same as above except that 12 turns were used on each primary and secondary. The primary and secondary of each coil were placed side by side about ~ in. apart, and the coils were arranged in triangular fashion to prevent induction from one to the other. (Note: primary and secondary coils could be placed end to end if desired.) To wind coils use two pieces of wire and wind side by side on a round rod or pencil. Slide both off the rod and unscrew ~ne out of the other, giving you two matched coils.

The above coils produced somewhat erratic results and rather weird psychic phenomena, and are perhaps too high in frequency, which may put them into an undesirable astral range. It is suggested that several different size coils be tried. For convenience these can be arranged on some sort of a plug—in mounting board for quick interchange.

TUBE NOTE — The 2E31 tube is a sub—miniature tube developed for pocket size radios, and available only from Raytheon. It has wire leads long enough to permit connecting into the circuit without a socket. Sockets are available, however, which would make tube replacement easier; in which case the leads are cut shorter to form pins. Almost any small tube could be substituted in case of necessity. (And now in 1960 Transistors and GE Tunnel Diodes are available for operation in this ultra high frequency range, with far less battery drain than the Raytheon tube. -Crabb)

BATTERY AND SWITCH NOTE — A standard flashlight battery, when new, has a voltage ~ volt higher than specified for the tube. A penlight cell may be used, however, as the voltage soon drops under load. The “A” battery leads could be soldered directly to the battery, or some sort of spring mounting clip devised. The power should be turned on by a small rheostat, rather than a switch, as the first inrush of current might otherwise be excessive. To prevent a possibility of tube burnout the “A” battery should always be turned on before the “B”. A momentary—contact or push—button type switch is recommended in the “B” battery lead. Then, in event of undesirable psychic results, the natural reaction would be to release the switch, thus shutting the device off.

GENERAL NOTES — Ultra high frequency devices such as this are very sensitive to induction between parts. In circuit diagrams lines are often shown parallel as a matter of drafting convenience. In actual construction they should run at angles to each other and be kept as short as possible.

The most desirable construction would be to mount the device on a metallic chassis (copper or aluminum), with each of the three sets of coils in their own shielding cans, which should connect to the chassis. It would also be well to enclose the entire device in a metallic box or enclosure, with only the con­trols and items (5) and (8) projecting outside. These shielding parts could be bent up out of thin sheet aluminum, or made of foil covered cardboard.

MODULATOR NOTES — [Items (3), (7) & (8)] Communicators advise that the frequencies involved are intermediate between radio and optical waves. To quote the remarks of Associate John, these are in the “dog house corner of electronics”; too high for wires and too low for wave guides. Since there is no available component which would respond to the fundamental frequency, communicators are attempting in their circuit to pick up and use as a modulating frequency one of the lower or higher harmonics. The phono pick—up cartridge listed is about the most compact and the cheapest device which would respond to the lower electro—magnetic harmonics. Certain types of magnetic or dynamic microphones might work equally as well. Only the coils and cores function. All other parts are surplus but need not be removed unless desired.

It should also be possible to make the device function with the upper harmonics: in the sub or ultra optical, or the heat, range. Certain types of photo—electric cells will respond to frequencies outside the visible spectrum. To eliminate possible undesired interference from visible light rays, communicators suggest using either infra—red or ultra—violet filters, both plain and polarized. If any change is made in part (8) it will probably be necessary to also make changes in coupling coil (3) which must have the proper characteristics to match (8) to the rest of the circuit.

CAUTIONS — Experimenters should have considerable background in psychic and occult matters, as some possible results might otherwise be a severe mental shock. The most effective use of the device seems to be when it is bound to the forehead, but this is rather dangerous and Meade Layne urges very great caution in placing it over any chakra area. There is some danger of actual brain cell damage, particularly if the frequency is not correct, or the unit insufficiently shielded. Until much more is known about it than at present, it is recommended that the maximum usage be not more than one hour at a time, and not more than 3 or 4 times in any 24 hours. If the user experiences any distortion of vision or hearing ~ using the device, or unusual difficulty in concentrating or remembering, discontinue all use until completely normal, and reduce subsequent use to very short periods.

AN ELECTRONIC EXPERT’S OPINION ON HERMES

After the initial release of the Project Hermes diagram in 1951, Associate Holland felt the need for an independent opinion on its possible effectiveness, preferably from an electronics expert who had passed over to the invisible worlds. When again in touch with his original communicator on the device, Holland asked for such a contact.

“I was told he had devices by which he could ‘connect’ with anyone I wished to contact, provided that person was willing and able to talk at that particular time. I suggested Nikola Tesla, and, after a few moments delay, was told that he could and would discuss it for a short time. The following is therefore supposed to be a conversation with N.T., but I should like to warn that I have been frequently bothered by cases of impersonation in these matters, so it should not be taken at face value but analyzed critically.

THE BEAT NOTE FREQUENCY

Here are a few paragraphs from the letter to which Holland referred in his talk with Nikola Tesla. The letter to Holland was from Associate Ed Schultz in Buffalo, New York.

“It has been my hunch—theory that when any earthian circuit oscillates it also produces at the same time, overtones of higher octaves, in the matter of hyperspaces, corresponding to mental— matter frequencies, astral—matter frequencies and to etheric— matter frequencies. And we know that etheric matter is part of our physical spectrum of matter, which brings us right next door as it were to the potentialities and responses of our gross cir­cuit elements and components. Now let’s see what could happen here. Suppose your Project Hermes oscillator circuit is perking away and at the same time oscillating in terms of the higher—octave, overtone matter of the mental, astral and etheric planes.

“It is then not impossible to envision the mental frequency octave heterodyning with the astral octave, to produce a beat—note. Then suppose that beat—note heterodynes with the ether octave and produces a beat—note within the range and frequency of our earth plane hookup. This would complete the cycle and —— we are in tune with mental frequencies. We can note that, if we dispense with the mental matter octave and begin with the astral, the whole thing would form the basis of an astral communication instrument, the objective of the ages.”

Associate Ed John’s COMMENTS

“This device is a sneaker. It works and it works well. Perhaps too well. I have discovered that it isn’t wise to use it too often, as it tends to stimulate some unused portion of the brain, and causes kickbacks of some rather strange psychic phenomena, even semi—materializations of objects that happen to be uppermost in the operator’s mind at that time of particular use.

“I have already tested it on many others and it has not yet failed to make some sort of a response on every test person. Some experience great clairvoyance. Others see beings in other worlds, and still others see and hear both backwards and forwards in time. Others merely see the souls of those who have died some time ago.

“Your subjects no doubt are too tense as yet to feel any of the feeble radiations from the set. . . A nervous, irritable and somewhat frightened person will perhaps get only a headache. Make certain of several factors in your subject first: A, that he does not have to go someplace- in a hurry; B, that he is relaxed; C, that he has a decided curiosity regarding what he’ll hear or see; D, that he tries to contact some definite person of whom he has read or heard of in history of mythology.

“Naturally, when one puts one of these devices on and sits there with an expectant look on his face, and a blank mind, that’s just what he gets, a blank. Remember this device is a two—way apparatus, and if one wishes to hear someone he must send out a call to someone. . . Beings of other dimensions wait until they are called then they try to answer. Remember they are afraid of being called ‘queer’ in their world, too; so why should they try to start to speak to someone just because that someone built a receiver to perceive them?

“The receiver works and well, too, but give it a chance. Wait until you are in a mood to have an open mind and wish to see and speak to persons in ancient Egypt or other parts of the earth. It’s especially effective in conversing with the people who land spaceships here from Orion, Arcturus and the Great Bear constellations.

NEWLY MARRIED POOR SUBJECTS

“Young people who are newly married are the poorest subjects. They only get a headache. The next poorest are those who have many legal troubles and too much business on their brains. Therefore, the average person it will work to a degree but the best are those who live and work on the sea, boatmen or fishermen who care not much for earthly things and have a slight knowledge of the occult. Weak mediums are better than these but keep it away from well developed, strong mediums.”

So there you have it! Ed John reported almost 100% success with Project Hermes, and all others, of those reporting to BSRA Headquarters in 1952 and 53, reported 100% failure. This wide gap leaves us just about where we started in 1951. The present director of BSRA obtained zero results with the model he built in Honolulu in 1952, though no test equipment was used to discover if the thing was even oscillating properly, or if it would oscillate. I read over Ed John’s letters to Meade Layne describing his successful operation of the device and you get an idea of what may happen to you if you succeed in making it work. You’ll be out, brother, way out!

A sketch of John’s device showed it to be 4 inches high, l~ inches wide and 3/4 inches thick. He fastened a small plastic block to the back, and provided a headband so it could be worn on the forehead. The tube and resistor were at the bottom, with the tuning condenser in the center, and the phono pick—up unit at the top. The weight of the entire device, not including batteries, was 4 ounces.

CAUTION FROM AN ASSOCIATE IN FLORIDA

Associate Wagner of DeFuniak Springs has had his own other—world contacts for years. He took up Project Hermes with them and discovered the same guarded optimism about it. Below are excerpts from his April, 1952 letter to Hdq as released by Meade Layne to the Associates.

“…liked a report last night on Project Hermes. Our informant says there is a good basis for the project. Present layout must be greatly modified. Delicate tuning will prove to be essential. Diagram as given very imperfect —— as Tesla seems to have said also —— but it is a start on the way.

“A far better understanding of what the thing is doing and how it produces its effects must be had before it will be safe to use. The effect on the subject using it will be the same as that on a medium who is kept too long at work. Cause undue strain and wear and many would not stand up under it. They can do nothing from their side to control the thing [...]

“A different tuning necessary for each brain, and a certain (definite) means for regulating the strength of the stimulus given the brain of the user. In each case would have to be adjusted for the victim at hand, both as to frequency and as to power output.

“Will not work for everyone, but with those of mediumistic ability. Effect is that of a powerful group of sitters. May be valuable in allowing a small group more available material for the Invisibles to work with. Lot of value in its present form; but definitely something worthy of experimentation, but not for everyone. Being asked if it would help open the channel we were using the reply was that in the future perhaps, dangerous at this stage. ‘Let the gadgeteers work with it for now.”‘

The present director of BSRA hopes that Associates and other borderland researchers with the necessary technical background will pick up Project Hermes this time and push it through to a successful conclusion. In view of the world situation nine years ago perhaps the 1951 release was premature; I hope that’s all that was wrong with it —— no “push” from the other side of the veil. There may be willing cooperation in perfecting it now where there was none or little before. Also, now in 1960, the electronics industry has pushed much farther into that “dog house corner of radio” and we have much better equipment and data available to. us.

Anyhow, having read this Borderland Sciences Research Associates publication, you now know as much about Project Hermes as I do. With this, and with the information put forward by J. Gilbert E. Wright, you have plenty to think about, and gadget—data to work with: have fun! —Riley Crabb

Comments by James Borges, with excerpts from Viktor Schauberger‘s “The Dethronement Of Science” (Implosion Magazine, May 1955, No. 50), as originally printed in Journal of Borderland Research (2004 annual)

The tradition of Borderland Sciences is based on the methods used in antiquity before the Dark Ages of Civilization. It was the science that raised the Pyramids in Egypt and in Mexico. It was the science that is hinted at in the Vedas. It was the science that brought about a Golden Age of humanity in all areas of the world. Then there arose a new class of rulers who were pragmatic and materialistic, whose dim consciousness then suppressed Borderland Sciences and the Dark Ages were begun. The Golden Age had led to an expansion of the individual that was not conducive to tightly controlled fundamentalist society. The Dark Ages gave birth to the secret mystery school of Alchemy. The tradition of the Borderland Scientist would continue to persist in small laboratories until it would blossom again in profound thinkers like Swedenborg, Goethe, Schauberger and Tesla. The flame of the lamp grows steadily brighter and casts away the darkness. The shadows flicker and as the Truth is slowly revealed the walls will rumble as Materialistic Science is tumbled from its throne.

“The teachings of the Tabula Smaragdina were incised into the hardest precious stone the emerald. Handed down to us from antiquity, they preach that a happy and healthy existence is dependent on the naturalesque intermixture of the stuff of Heaven and Earth. The progeny of this marriage between exalted atmospheric and geospheric ethericities is water, the blood of the Earth. This ur-source of life comes into being when the ethericities of the Earth bind with those of Heaven. For this the maternal forces and energies must be more powerful than the incident fertilizing substances, for of the process takes place in reverse order, then fire is created.”

Schauberger is of the same mystic tradition of Goethe; the depths of perception employed in the western mystery tradition had profound influences on both these Borderland Scientists. The use of alchemical and eidetic imagery stirs the very foundation of consciousness and is deeply expressed in the world view of these great thinkers. Like Goethe, Schauberger takes us into the realm of inner perception to demonstrate before our “minds-eye” the interchange between the ethericities of Earth and Heaven. From this powerful kernel of imagery Shauberger will expand and emanate practical ideas and applications. This is the tradition of Borderland Science; the initial investigations are done internally in the perceptions and ideas of the experimenter. From this borderland, practical ideas emerge and are developed. The tendency of Borderland Scientists to speculate on the long term evolution of an idea is based on method. All life begins as a simple form and gradually grows more complex. Once an idea is taken into the perceptions and fully integrated it takes on a life of its own, it reveals the potentials inherent in its form. As if time is sped up, the borderland perception is one of utter wholeness. Those without this perception tend to mock the leaps the scientist makes with their claims for the future. It would seem silly to speak of building a bridge when a tree is just a sapling if a person had never seen a tree before, but in time the tree will grow and the person will understand how it could be used to build a bridge. Schauberger, like all Borderland Scientists, relies heavily on the inner perceptions to conceive the inner processes of nature.

“The art of increasing and qualitatively improving water has been so thoroughly lost over the millennia that today no one knows what water actually is. How it comes into being, how it deteriorates or how it dies and subsides is still a mystery. If the degeneration and disappearance of water cannot be successfully halted, the earth will turn into a treeless desert. The whole of civilization is threatened! The survival or disappearance of humanity is thus at stake. We are concerned here with neither politics, nor racism, nor an invention in the usual sense of the word, but with the question: what is more important for evolution and development, water or fire? This is what it is all about, and nothing else! Everything else must retreat far into the background. Without water there is no habitat and no life!

Most people know that machines are indirectly driven by fire. Entirely unknown, however, is that energy can be achieved far more simply and cheaply through the artificial production of water. Furthermore, growth can be promoted, increased and ennobled in the process. Therefore not only will the problem of an independent existence be solved, but in the future there will be no shortage of raw materials provided the mixture of heavenly and earthly essence can be naturalesquely fostered. This involves the industrial duplication of ‘photo-synthesis’, which is conditional on the possibility of energizing the hydrocarbons. With this discovery (which the University of California has so far sought in vain) all armed conflict will be unnecessary. In future no sane individual will allow himself to be drawn into a war merely to satisfy power-mongers.

All robbery will likewise cease once everything is available in superabundance, for with the artificial production of water, vast tracts of desert can be restored to their former fertility and provide living space for the ever-increasing mass of humanity. There will no longer be the need to exploit this ancient art for the purposes of war. Whether the disturbance of the water-balance happened out of ignorance or to maintain the economic status quo, through the iniquitous world-wide traffic in foodstuffs and raw materials, cannot be addressed here.

The fact is that, as today’s technology has progressed, the point has been reached where the proliferation of cancer is not only universal, but apparently unstoppable. For this reason the only solution is to put an end to the self-deception by reintroducing practices that promote the natural treatment of water. All this has nothing to do with science for it involves the diametric reversal of the methods applied by today’s fire-sitting technology, a technology that should be considered the true causative agent of cancer. Perhaps it is necessary for the misery and privation of humanity to become so intense, before it is finally recognized that science, as the guiding force of humanity, has made a disastrous blunder by implementing reversed energetic interactions between basic elements. In consequence, any possibility of resuscitating Nature’s principal formative substance, reduced protein, was brought to a halt. It was thus inevitable that the process of decay would become so rife in both air and water. This exemplifies the disastrous errors in motion and excitation made by a science founded on unnatural principles.”

Schauberger is expressing a vital lesson in alchemy. He is illustrating the how the qualities of water promote life and those of fire promote death. Schauberger is not afraid to contrast the terrifying specter of extinction that is the result of misguided science with optimistic speculations of the future if we can dethrone science as we know it. By contrasting the ‘unnatural principles’ with his own observations, Schauberger gives a glimpse at the breadth of thinking required to synthesize science with natural principles. The principles put forward by Schauberger show how nature is “a constantly self-changing interaction triggered by constant fluctuations in temperature”, this become clear by contrast to the self-annihilation breed by modern technology. The Borderland Scientists often use contrast in very emotional terms. There is some degree of sorrow when the projections of ideas are made in the inner perceptions and followed out to perfection and it becomes clear to the scientist that our world is sadly going in the wrong direction. Schauberger never dwells on the negative but always pushes past with an idea for healing and change, a wonderful example for the doom and gloom radio hosts and ilk.

“The Nobel Prize winner, Otto Warburg, proposed in a scientific journal that the formation of cancer cells was caused be a deficiency of oxygen. A healthy cell is supplied with oxygen by the blood and uses it to process nutrients, thereby acquiring life-energy. However, Warburg has now asserted that the cell receives too little oxygen. As a result the lactic acid becomes thoroughly fermented, the cell grows and divides more rapidly and in the process turns into a cancer cell. This is also confirmed by Professor Domagk. Both researchers, however, made a crucial mistake. They failed to see that it makes a considerable difference whether modified or unmodified oxygen enters the blood. Modified oxygen is formed when it is filtered by the lungs. Only then can it be taken up by fructigenic ethericities via the bloodstream, which on their part have been purified by the filters of the intestines.

If this process of purification is in any way disturbed, then an oxygen deficiency results, leading to suffocation and putrefaction of the unfertilized ethericities of protein. This is the answer to the riddle. This is where a yawning gap in scientific knowledge lies and without its closure cancer cannot be cured. Nature precludes the use of one and the same form of energy for different purposes.

Hence the report continues; “Those afflicted by cancer and whose lives are threatened by this terrible disease will read of Warburg’s findings with resignation. Moreover, they will demand to know why the oxygen deficiency has not been prevented. According to Warburg, in this way the incidence of cancer could be reduced too fraction of its present state if the cells of the body could be protected from chronic damage. How this was supposed to happen, however, he was unable to say.”

Dr. Liebmann, director of the Biological Research Institute in Munich, held that this involved the disturbance of the biological equilibrium. He overlooked the fact, however, that a state of equilibrium would necessarily imply a developmental standstill. In reality, it is a question of the disturbance of animating rhythm. There is no such thing as a rigid conformity with natural law, but only a constantly self-changing interaction triggered off by constant fluctuations of temperature. If these are regulated so as to ensure that a predominance of recreative (refreshing) influences of temperature is maintained, then the enormous problem of more and more people and less and less food will be solved. There are two fundamentally different types of motion, both in principle and nature, which respectively initiate different kinds of excitation in bipolar mixtures of basic elements. In this connection, water, the physically first born and the very blood of the Earth, plays the role of the mediator in both natural and unnatural energetic synthesis. At the same time it is also the recorder of changes in potential that have already occurred. From this it can be determined what form of energy prevails in this natural accumulator. The decisive factor here is that contemporary technology is only aware of and only uses those methods of conveying or moving various media which initiate a reactive increase in pressure and heat. These methods will here be termed ‘techno-academic’, because they are taught in all academies, universities, high schools and technical colleges. Albert Einstein used them to create a form of energy destructive of all Creation. With this, modern technology has achieved a the peak of performance in self-annihilation and turned itself into an absurdity.

From transmissions from ancient times, it is quite clear that those peoples of Indo-Germanic origin or Aryan culture favored a different form of mass-motion. They over-stimulated it, however, and disrupted the unstable state of equilibrium in the other direction. This resulted in whole sections of the Earth being torn upwards (the cataclysm of Atlantis). They strayed from the golden middle way. Existence or non-existence is dependent on the rhythmical dynamics of bipolar forces. We can see this in the alternation of night and day which serves the constant improvement and perfection of the processes of reproduction and higher evolution.

Formative forms of motion are hallmarked by the development of an atomic negative pressure. Professor Ernst Ferdinand Sauerbruch, a surgeon, discovered it in 1908. He realized that without the existence of negative pressure between the lung surfaces and the pleura, any inhalation and exhalation of diffuse (purified and exalted) precipitates of solar energy (chemically termed oxygen) would be impossible. In other words, there would be no re-spire-ation (fertilizing) of digested, nutritive ethericities, which in exalted form enter the hermetically sealed blood or sap by way of diffusion. Unfortunately Professor Sauerbruch failed to see that this force, which internally bonds (emulsifies) the ethericities of fructigenic and seminal matter, is the diamagnetism discovered by Michael Faraday in 1845. Diamagnetism is also known as healing magnetism, animal magnetism or mesmerism an ism that science views with disfavor. It manifests itself in a similar fashion to the pressural atomic forces that move a dowsing rod. Like the previously mentioned magnetism, this later force can neither be measured nor weighed exactly and is hence rejected by science.

There are some forms of energy that are known to alter the values indicated by measuring instruments and on occasion actually to contradict them. Thus it would appear, for example, that the speed of light is constant and therefore invariable. The same also holds true for the so called acceleration of free fall, because there is no measuring device that can differentiate between specific and absolute weight. In terms of physical mass, the former is to be construed as breathing (animated), whereas the latter is to be understood as less-breathing, the almost-lifeless. Before Galileo arrived on the scene with his discoveries, the theories of Aristotle held sway and it was believed that providing there were no disturbing influences, heavier bodies fell faster than lighter ones That this was actually related to the different fall-velocities of bodies having either specific or absolute weights was completely disregarded. These constantly vary according to state of their intrinsic qualities. If sufficient qualigen is concentrated in water, for example, then gravity can be partially overcome. Speculative thinkers will be unable to understand this, however, unless they observe Nature’s instructive examples very closely.”

Schauberger stresses the importance of close observation of Nature. It is his experiences in Nature while deep in contemplative trance that he learned the mysteries of Levitation by watching the salmon leap up waterfalls. Like Goethe before him, from the inner worlds of perception he brought forth ideas that can be scientifically investigated.

His inner perceptions of motion were drawn from countless hours of observing the flow of natural water. Able to recognize forces such as Diamagnetism in nature within his own inner perceptions Schauberger has been able to move forward in spite of the difficulties faced with trying to measure these borderland energies. This point cannot be overemphasized in this journal. It is the ability to perceive ideas and unfold them that is the primary skill and tool of the Borderland Scientist. Most tools, instruments and math of the science lab will do us no good.

Further evidence of Schauberger’s influence from Goethe and the Western Mystery School is the unique explanation for the destruction of Atlantis. Like all great thinkers Schauberger extends the tradition, by a brilliant use of mystic history. The insight into the misuse of the very forces he is promoting is the kind of balanced insight that his training in the mysteries has brought out. The dangers of unbalanced duality are a key element in the education of the Mystery Schools.

“It must be stated at the outset that in this case the decisive but previously overlooked concentration of qualigen in only possible with the aid of radial axial motion. Every medium becomes heavier if it is unable to breath and its life removed. His occurs immediately if excessive influences of heat and pressure are brought to bear by the opposite form of motion. In this case the diamagnetic, or adsuctional force (namely Professor Warburg’s life-energy) and otherwise known as levitational force by people of ancient cultures, is lost.

If the importance of the formative, synthesizing and levitating force, produced by centripetal motion only, had been recognized for what it is, then the tragic error made by Newton and Leibniz would have been avoided. They believed that life could be comprehended with great precision through the methodology of mathematics (integral and differential calculus). It is this erroneous reasoning that the whole world has to thank for that evil that Albert Einstein foisted upon us through the exploitation of an all destroying atomic energy.

A simple experiment demonstrates the a predominantly axially-radially moved (and therefore de-animated) water begins to breath again and to rise upwards autonomously, when certain preconditions it is simply made to move planetarily. All forms of growth and more highly-evolved forms of life draw in diffuse (purified and exalted) oxygen. When unpurified oxygen is impressed from without, disorder and cancer come into being, because cancer is an entity that has been expelled from a state of order.

If pure, nitrogen-free oxygen is forced into the lungs of a child over too long a period, then it goes blind. Adults are threatened with an incurable lung inflammation. At high altitudes the more thoroughly the Sun in-presses the body with unpurified energies, the sooner the blood and sap begin to decompose. The same also applies in forestry, when for the sake of greater quantity and rapidity of rotation, shade-demanding trees, which have far too thin a layer of protective bark, are exposed to direct sunlight, producing unhealthy, ‘light-induced’ growth. This also happens if forests are excessively thinned. However, if a forest floor that has lain for centuries in protective shade, is warmed above +9C by excessive clear-felling and thinning, then reafforestation is only possible with deep-rooted, light demanding species. Such reafforestation is fraught with enormous problems. The young plants have first to grow under the scalding light of the sun until they are large enough to provide the ground with new protective shade. Wholesale karst development (erosion) can only be prevented where the slope is not too steep and the solar radiation is not excessive.

Almost all monocultivated, plantation forests originate from this ignorance. They can therefore quite properly be described as cancer-prone. They lack diamagnetic, adsuctional and insuctional force and can no longer produce fertile seeds. As in the case with the remaining, once cleared, old-growth forests, they too can be considered lost if the present methods of forestry are not drastically and quickly altered. Today’s fertile soils and whatever water still remains are already over-acidified and polluted to such a degree that there can be no recovery without radical remedial measures.

In Nature everything is reversible. The last hope for restoring the natural order of things lies in the mechanical production of diamagnetism which comes about in the opposite way to the present generation of electricity. The idea of generating life giving energy mechanically and restoring water’s life-force and ability to breathe may sound fantastic. Yet, the behavior of water itself shows us how this comes about, as it sinks lifelessly back into the womb of the Earth only to rise upwards again as noble water in mountain springs. The reason this has been impossible to copy this natural process so far is simply because the enabling form of motion was unknown. People mistakenly believe the earth’s rotation to be circular. With circular motion, however, no negative pressure or drop in temperature can be achieved. Since the present way of looking at things is founded on a false world-view, humanity has set foot on the road of an unstoppable, regressive proliferation of cancer. As long as the meditative substances water and air continue to be moved incorrectly with the exclusive use of centrifugence any production of qualigen or increase and improvement of water and growth will be impossible. Qualigen can only be produced with cold systems of flow, in which the more thoroughly atomized the substances (sediments) contained in the water become, the more powerful the life-energies.”

“Here it should be again stressed that if the media of earth, air and water are moved centrifugally, then reactive, decentrating forces evolve from the resultant unnatural intermixture of bipolar concentrates. These also develop if any medium is over-illuminated and/or over warmed by unpurified (unfiltered) solar radiation. It can therefore be stated that in this case the pressure and heat associated with it increase by the square of the speed of motion. In both cases, however, the resistance to motion also increases that is a retroactive force evolves which, viewed ecologically, represents a decomposive energy or its other form, cancer. In this instance matter is rendered lifeless. Oxidizing processes follow, and since the levitative forces have been reduced, matter becomes specifically heavier. Red-hot iron, for example, is heavier than cold iron. Einstein was right in his deduction that mass the concentrate of basic elements was dependent on velocity. However, it is the type of motion that determines whether decentrating or concentrating forces arise. In the first case pressure and heat are produced and it the second, a negative pressure (vacuum), which intensifies by the square of the centripetally-in-winding orbital velocity.”

Introducing a new Alchemical Technology, or Ecotechnology, Schauberger explains how the basics of radial axial motion will produce qualigens, quality-enhancing life forces. Ecotechnology is based on movement, centripetal forces, adsuctional or insuctional. The type of motion determines whether decentrating or concentrating forces arise. Ecotechnology makes use of the same forces of nature that Alchemy described in its hidden terms. Still requiring a terminology of its own Ecotechnology shows how the Sun interacts with the elements of water and air, shows how the damage done by fire can only be cured by the forces of water. Ecotechnology glimpses the purification process in nature and also the exact processes of decay. Through an understanding of these processes, we see the possibility of restoring the decay and damage done to the earth by pollution with life-giving energy mechanically generated.

“In this way it is therefore possible to transform ordinary air at room temperature into chemically pure water in a fraction of a second. This is associated with a 1,700-fold decrease in volume, through which an atomic negative pressure evolves, whose attractive force is stronger than any explosive pressure. The precipitation of rainwater described above therefore explains the production of rain in any quantity without the formation of thunderstorms. Such water can be converted into the noblest mountain spring water, provided it is moved planetarily for a short period, as happens in the womb of Mother Earth.”

Ecotechnology that transforms air into water is the natural extension and evolution of the Alchemical tradition into our modern times. By adhering to the principles of Hermes Trismegistus and the Emerald Tablet (As Above, So Below) Ecotechnology simulates the geometry and motions of Earth. It is through these cold systems of flow that the damage done to the earth by over heating from unpurified solar energy can be balanced and healed. In the Hermetic Tradition of Alchemy, in the process of emanation Fire and Water combined to make Air. With Ecotechnology this is recognized and the balance between Fire and Water is engineered with radial axial movement of Air that produces diamagnetism or healing forces and creates qualigens.

“The technologist of to say has been taught to think logically, but not bio-ecologically. Therefore it is particularly difficult for him to appreciate the possibilities that ecotechnology offers towards the re-establishment of the proper and natural order of things, which has been disturbed at its most fundamental level. The time has come to free humanity from its dependence on coal and oil by creating those differences in potential that can be converted into kinetic energy. Since coal and oil will be exhausted in the foreseeable future, nuclear fission will be all that remains to banish the specter of energy shortages. This is the greatest delusion of all, however, because the radiation and waste accruing from the atomic energy will gradually contaminate the air we breath to such an extant that the mere inhaling of it will be lethal. Humanity therefore stands at an historical crossroad but in all probability it will continue to develop its present technology and dig its own grave. Then one day, thousands of years hence, the perhaps few remaining survivors will speak of the technical stupidity of their forebearers and shake their heads over the artifacts of a godforsaken science in whose programmed destruction took first place. Science can still be dethroned, however, through reversal of present principles. Instead of air pollution, ecotechnical air purification. Instead of the collapse of quality, the rise of quality. Founded as it is on rigid and dogmatic laws, contemporary science must therefore be prohibited by the fastest means possible.”
